Ok timing belt broke, any ideas on price for repairs? Also I need a strait and proven answer to "Is the 420a in the 2GNT an interference engine or not?" I've been getting false answeres as to no I probably didnt damage valves or yes I did. I want to know so I wont have to put the belt on and crank it to find that I have no compression. Also if I do have bent valves, whats the price for a machine shop to install new ones for me because I was told you can't do it yourself.

The 420A IS an interference engine. Many who have had timing belts break, water pumps that sieze that take out the timing belt, know first hand. By this ofcourse, means that you will most likely have bent valves..Now there is this very small remote possibility, that you didnt bend any valves, but i would almost plan on pulling the head. At a bare minimum, get the new belt on, and then before putting the rest of it back together, do a compression test. This way you dont have to tear apart the whole thing again if you have to pull the head.

Machine shop pricing varys greatly from shop to shop, and it all depends on what the head needs. If you need new valves, then you need a valve job/grind done. If the head needs to be decked for flatness, thats more money. I recently had a head done with a deck job, cleaning, valve guide oil seal replacement, and a valve grind for aprox 200. This is only labor prices.

I found valves around $7Ea exhaust side 10 intake from Orielly's. Used were just 7 each on the average. Expect the valve job to run you around 150. decking around 20.

Mine was $125 for a valve job and for the head to be cleaned of all deposits.

Yep, you prob bent some valves.

My head-job cost me about $400, with new guides, seals, valves, cleaning, decking etc. But the end result was beautiful, and it works like a charm.

Haha. Yea.

But in response, my job took about a week, but it was supposed to take 3 days. This is only because they work on other car heads too.

But, you can install the valves yourself. You just need a valve spring compressor.

I spent $204.28 for the following:

1) Hot tank the head (cleaning)
2) Bead blast valve stems (carbon build up)
3) Install valve stem seals (came with the head gasket set)
4) 3-Angle valve job (for proper valve seating)
5) Milled the head (to ensure flatness)
6) Replace one bad valve guide

This was done when I did my motor rebuild, I would expect somewhere between $125~$200 unless the broken timing belt really screwed you over.

I hope this helps...try to take it to a reputiable(sp?) machine shop...ask around!

And not just any valve spring compressor, most are to bulky to fit in the tight clearances...Most folks I know use one from Snapon....

This one fits across the top of the head, and the compressor slides along a bar across the top of the head....

Beleive me, I was in the sam position 2 weeks ago..probably longer...It's a PITA, especially when I have limited time to work on this thing....So I went out and found a reasembled head for just under $300(less than cost of tool and valvetrain parts and head work)....I got it from Ebay from "race114183" ....He doesn't say much, LOL..But the head looked tight and fit perfect....
