123188, No Spark Posted by madhatter210, Jan-30-06 03:29 PM
Heres the deal, I was driving no problems...I stopped at the light went to turn..the car stalled out. I tried to start it..and nothing. I had an extra coil pack with me so I changed it..still nothing...I figured I would check to see if it was fuel related quickly..I sprayed some starting fluid in the TB and nothing. I pulled a plug and had a stranger turn it over while I held it at the valve cover and no spark. I waited for my ride and went to autozone and changed the asd and fuel pump relay...and still nothing.I opened the timing belt window and had the stranger crank it over..all looked good. The belt and tensioner were replaced at 60k. I also put my by-pass in the MSD just to see if that maybe shit the bed..still nothing.
There are no codes.
In my search I saw that alot of people said the CamPS or CrankPS. Will these just shit the bed like that? I also read they could be tested but didn't really find what I was looking for exactly any help would be greatly accepted.
By the way mods :P I would like to change this title to something different after I get some help...maybe like Car stalled and No Spark.

That sucks. Sorry to hear that. When i completely unplugged my Cam Pos sensor it still cranked over and ran, didnt idle very well but still ran. so that may help you eliminate that.
Beside the crank position sensor you may want to check and see if the power is making it to the coil pack. Only thing i can think of offhand. Obviously your getting no spark, and you've already mentioned you changed out the relay. Im guessing you checked all the fuses and such as well.

Obviously you were smart enough to check ALL the fuses and fusible links right? obviously.

What he said ^^^.
Also, check out the harness along the EGR pipe. Could be a short there as well.
Backprobe your CMP and CAS at the ECU with a multimeter. You should see an alternating 5VDC while cranking from both. Remember that cams turn at half crank speed, so they will be the easiest to see.
Could be that your tensioner took a shit on you and slacked up a bit. Without pulling it all apart to inspect, you could maybe do a compression test to see if you've got compression.
Remember, if the ECU does not see the CAS and CMP in agreement, it will not fire the coilpack, so timing going out could be the problem.
Finally, do you hear the fuel pump prime, Rob? I had this happen one time on the freeway (of all places) and it turned out the connector on the fuel pump had actually come undone!
Good luck to you. Fucking gremlins!

Yeah I figured this is going to be gay...I am going to have it towed back here from the gas station...BLAH, I checked all the fuse's I did find a bad one for the ciggie lighter but lol that is not the issue. As far as fusible links go , I haven't started testing those yet. I don't have my eletricial testers with me yet...all my good tools are still in nj at a storage :(

The fusible links (aka fuse element) are the ones that usually blow when the EGR tube shorts out the harness. Theyre in the fusebox in the engine compartment. IIRC it's a 50-100amp link labelled "Engine/Motor" and looks like this:

If your car is a 95, might want to try starting it again after it has cooled off. If it starts up no problem, look into the ECU.

Thanks guys.. I checked all the fuses and fuseible links all good :(
I had to have it towed from the gas station though or "they" were going to do it for me :( So its sitting at a shop right know.

When you were cranking it over, did it sound like it had compression? If the timing belt skipped a bunch of teeth or if the piston met the valve the cranking sound will be a lot different.

yeah it definetly sounded like it had compression...A huge difference when I had the plug out checking for spark and turning over.I should hear back from the shop tomorrow what the deal is. :(

This sounds like something simple/stupid like my Eclipse. Checked connections and fuses a thousand times and nothing.
Turned out that one little wire was not powering the ECU for some odd reason and the car's computer wouldnt turn on.
Then after I found that problem I found out I had a dead cylinder...The story of the 1g is only getting better!

"UMMMmmmm we were just talking about your car and we are really not sure what to check here"
What the hell :(

well my idea to you would be to promptly remove car from shop and work on it yourself or find someone that does know how to work on it.

Yup it is leaving there in about an hour...I can't work on it here in the street because the nieghbors are assholes and will call to have it towed ....Blah such a waste of money.

If you are not getting any spark and everything else checks out ok I would say CPS. I had that problem before. I was driving home on the highway and the car just died. I changed the CPS and it fired right up.

Turned out the msd shit the bed and fried the cam position sensor.

Almost makes me want to get rid of mine, especially because I'm not using it anymore, other than for making a nice tach signal for my alarm. I wonder if anyone would buy it...

I should of listened to tim and dj..they told me 10 thousand times they will just shit the bed lol
They do not make msd like they used to that is for sure. I called them by the way and they said send it in to be looked at. I doubt I will put it back in...I think the only thing I liked was the staging rev and top end limiter...I didn't notice a difference really with it.
Hey and btw....my favorite quote from the first shop it was at. "ummm you know there are alot of speed parts on that car right?"

Ok.... I don't mean to thread jack but I am having a similar problem.. I have a 1995 AT that I swapped to MT. I am getting no spark. The coil pack is not firing! I have tested the coil pack and the ECU in another 2gnt and they work fine... So now I am on to look into this CAS and CMP. CAS = Cam Angle Sensor and CMP = Cam ????
Any help would be great guys thakns.

I would really like to get this puppy running..
Anyone?
Sincerely asking for you helps, Travis W
