123178, Does anyone know what the code means? Help please. Posted by cc8balla, May-17-06 06:01 AM
Well today, my car gave me a code called P1494, and I knew it was manufacturer specific, so I looked it up and it said:
P1494 Leak Detection Pump Switch or Mechanical Fault (Chrysler, Jeep)
Where is this at, and what is it talking about. I am drawing a blank on this one.

It's the pump that applies vacuum to the ank to detect leaks asd part of the EVAP system.
It's expensive.

Sounds like a distant relative to the CEL31 gremlin. I don't even know where the pump is located, but I bet it's on the decal under the hood...

Ok, thank you for the help. I erased it with my code reader, and it hasn't come back, yet. So it's probably nothing to worry about.

If you want more help, you need to tell us the year of your car, and the emissions standard (CA/FED). You'll also find a bunch of information if you search.

Although Dan disagrees with everything i say about this topic, this is what i know from a Master tech that worked for Chrysler (someone i know well), and info from the Snap-on MT 2500 scanner T-shooter Kart.
Leak Detection Pump: LDP
95: Didnt have LDP, some late models had one. (i parted one out that did) 96-early 98: in pass side front fender behind bumper air dam late 98-all 99: in rear of car by gas tank.
There were revisions to the 95-98 pump.
The LDP will pressurize the Evap system when the car is started cold within the first few mins or so. If a leak is detected a code will be stored. P1494 is LDP failure, the reed switch inside the pump is known for failure. Per the Dealer TSB, improper LDP diagnosis was a problem. In the late 95-early 98, the LDP must be mounted and positioned with the diaphram on the bottom of the LDP. If installed incorrectly, the LDP can throw codes for failure. Late 98-99 the LDp was slightly redesigned because the LDP was no longer mounted in the same fashion.
I have dealt with P1494 and the reset of the code is only temporary. THe code most likely will come back and the LDP must be replaced.

I have a '97 RS thedawg.
That sucks if I will have to replace the LDP. That code hasn't come back, but you said it is just a temp. fix. Damn. I'll have to see how much money this is now...

Well the good thing is that most chryslers used this pump so acquiring it in the junkyard should be too hard. If you cant find one let me know, i have 4. Before i knew most of this i had to replace one and i think it was around 160.0 for the stupid pump on my 96 talon.

Lol, most of what I know about this topic I got from your posts. I just have the two weird ones (early 95 and late 99) so I had a lot of questions trying to figure them out.
ccballa- LDP's suck. Fortunately you have the more common setup and you can grab what you need at the junkyards for cheap. The dealer will rape you sideways.
