Technically speaking the sound dampeing material is only on the bottom of the oil pan. It is not on the sides or the flange.

You know...the procedure where you send slightly smaller-than-original-sized chunks of your motor parts into the oil pan at orbital escape velocities.

What is said dampening material? Like what's it made of, fiberglass like in a muffler? Some sort of proprietary silicone that Chrysler spent about a million dollars on? Chicken feathers? :shrug

It's a sheet of asphalt-like substance similar to the black material used in Dynamat sound deadening mats. I repaired an oil pan recently and the stuff oozed out around where I was heating the metal.

Yummy! Does it really make a difference in how the car sounds without that dampener? I take it you won't find that stiff in an aftermarket pan like Moroso's or other.

And in classic ricer form my mind immediately just went too;
"How much does it weigh, could I melt it out and lose a pound?!?"
Sometimes I hate my inner ricer!
