122724, Question about rack & pinion lines/hoses. Posted by cougar694u, Aug-07-06 04:41 PM
I thought the rack was leaking, but after looking I think it's a line that's attached to the rack & pinion. The rack looked fairly new and the boots are nice and rubbery still, no leaks from around there.
Under the car, on the bottom side of the rack, there are two lines, I'm guessing for pressure to move it either way. One line that runs from where the steering column comes into it to the other side of the rack leaks near the steering column. I got to looking and the mullet before me put JB Weld around it. It peeled off fairly easily and can see where the fluid had been squirting out and pushed some out of the way.
Has anyone ever replaced this line or had a problem similar to this? If so, where can I buy it, or what are my options?
TIA!

It's probably a junkyard or dealer-only part. No telling...

That's what I figured. I may take it off and go to a hydraulic supply to see about having one made.

I had to replace one of them before. It was a dealer only part and I had to buy the set. I still have the other one and it's still in the package. Ill take a picture of it and you can decide if it's the one you need to replace. If it is indeed the one, you can have it, just pay shipping.
Update: Here is what it looks like. Check to see which one is bad on your car and let me know if you'll be needing this.

Shit, I can't tell just by looking, I'm not familiar enough with it. Do you remember which you replaced? When under the car, it was the one attached towards the center of the car at the steering column. Honestly, that looks like the other because of it's shape, but I don't know for sure.
How much did you pay for the set at the dealer?
**EDIT** Are those o-rings on the ends?

Thanks. I looked it up in CAPS and they do sell them seperately, roughly $28-30 each.

let me know if they do come with orings. I just noticed a huge leak in the same area on my bros car.
Last time I saw a leak at a line like that was on my other bros Firebird, the mechanic that replaced the line chewed the oring up doing it...60 cents later I had it fixed.

I replaced the o-ring and it still leaked. :(
Not sure if the o-ring I used was the perfectly wrong size, but it leaked by turning the steering wheel while the car was not running, on jack stands.
**EDIT** But I didn't order the lines from satan, just tried to replace the o-rings on the current line. The 2nd one didn't leak, but it may not have had any pressure.

Well, the o-rings I used were too big and didn't seal it properly. I pulled the line off a rack at a junk yard and bolted it up and it worked fine. The only difference was the o-ring was actually kinda small, and I think i went over-kill with the one I tried to use.

blasted o rings...
I think the car Im working on might be the rack itself... damn it.
