Well, you also hafta unbolt the 4 flex plate bolts so that the motor can slide out. Then turn the motor so that the belts are more towards the front of the car. You kinda hafta twist the motor out. I mean, the Neon guys can do a whole 2.4L swap without removing the transmission, and we have a bigger engine bay. -=B-=

Yah, Eclipsekaiser and I spent about an hour yanking the motor around before we found the access panel on the bottom of the tranny that lets you get to the four flexplate bolts. :rolleyes You have to have the oilpan off as I recall. Just do one at a time, and spin the flexplate with a wooden ruler or something to get to the next one.
Here's pix, may help: http://www.signal11.com/~thedawg/car/drop Look at pic 56, you can see how banged up the crank pulley was after being slammed into the frame for an hour. :thumbsup

Just wondering why you would take the engine out without the trans??? It is easy to pull everything out and put it back in. Why make it harder than it has to be??

Because a lot of us find it easier to pull the engine out without the trans. unbolt the housing, unbolt the flexplate, undo 2 motor mounts. Thats it.

Cause that's how their daddy's taught them to. This type of thing all goes back to the first time you and your dad pulled an engine and what order you guys did it in. After that one fateful day, you'll do it the same way for the rest of your life, and then you'll teach it to your son, and he'll do it the same way for the rest of his. And everytime you pull an engine with a guy whose dad taught him to do it the other way you'll say, "why do you want to do it like that?!?" and he'll explain, then you'll tell him why your way is better, you'll both get drunk and magically the engine is out 5 hours later and neither one of you remember how it happened. It's the circle of life!

LOL.....the circle of life...in the jungle, the mighty jungle, the lion sleeps tonight......I know Im retarded.
Anyway IMO it is easier to remove the motor with out the tranny because you dont have to take that extra step to remove the axles. Let me tell you, I bent 2 breaker bars trying to get the axle nut off of the hub. Then I used the almighty search button and found this info.

Ok I see your point. It always easier doing it the way you want. I have to say I havent had any problem with the axles or bolts. To each his own.....good luck.

It depends on what I'm doing. If I only need the motor out, I only pull the motor out. If I need motor & tranny out, I'll pull them both at the same time.
True, it's a matter of preference and what you're comfortable with, or how you were tought, but why add more work to the job if it's not needed. I find it easier to pull the motor by itself if I only need the motor out.

Agreed. if i only need the motor, only the motor comes out.
I've done both ways several times each, and doing just the motor is faster, easier, and less work, despite what any of you might say or think. You're wrong. :)
