Okay I started disconnection and labeling wires last night to start pulling the motor out to start the rebuild finally. My question is, is it easier to leave the tranny in and pull it aside or is it easier to take it out with the engine? Also, should I leave the head on block or just take it as one piece.

Any tips besides A LOT of beer are welcome because I have that covered already :).

I am pretty much going by the Haynnes manual for this which SUCKS!

forget the haynes.

Disconnect all electrical
disconnect all water lines
disconnect exhaust
remove battery/tray and washer fluid tank.
Remove any intake pipes/intercooler pipes.
remove P/S pump and pull to side out of the way.
Remove A/c comressor let dangle under car.
Remove axles
remove Emissions vacuum lines (2 or 3)
remove bolts in mounts with engine supported.
pull engine with trans

My mentality.....easier to pull axles than clutch bolts ect. With engine out you can swap the tranny even easier.

Clutch bolts?

With a manual tranny, the input shaft just slides out of the clutch, no bolts, no biggie. I pulled the motor only and left the tranny.

It'll be different on an atx due to the tq converter, probably easy to get it all, unless you can unbolt the tq conv. easily.

I was referring ot flywheel bolts. If he is swapping out motors he will need a clutch unless he has a new one in which case he will need the bolts and flex plate ect.

I pulled mine out with the motor. But I used a leveler, it made it much easier.

I pulled my motor out with the tranny.


Just chain it up at the lift brackets and hook the cherry picker on the chain, closer to the timing belt side. So that when you lift the motor, the motor/trany will come out kinda sideways with the tranny hanging low.

Make sure you have a few friends to help you out and keep an eye on any hoses or wires that you forgot or your firewall.

I pulled it out, rebuilt it, and put it back in with no help whatsoever. Aggrivating to the fullest imo. I broke my phone because it kept ringing as I was trying to drop it in and line everything up. I threw it across the garage...

yes It is easier to pull the engine and tranny completely assembled.

Just like mentioned above, you have to tilt it so that the passenger side is higher then the drivers side. If you dont the tranny will hit the engine bay.

Its not that hard to do it by yourself, But it is so much easier and safer if you have some one jacking up the cherry picker while another person guides the engine and tranny out.

Boy was it "fun" to do by myself though.

Hell no, it took 3, my house was a ghost town until I was done with the car.

When we took out Spoolin GS's motor there was (3) people there. We used a cherry picker with a leveler. Like he said ^^^^^^^^^, you have to kinda angle it to bring it out.

Take it out with the motor....no sense leaving it in there. If there is anyway you have access to a lift, its MUCH easier to lower the car onto the engine(when you re-install it) than vice-versa. goodluck!

i've done it both ways and i'd say take the tranny out with it.

i can have the motor itself out in about 2 hours without yankin the trans

remove the lower access panel on the bell housing, rotate the clutch/flexplate and undo the 19mm bolts all the way around (4)

comes out 10x easier in my honest opinion

ATX and MTX both have problems with clearance if you do not undo the 4 rear 19mm bolts i described above, the input shaft doesnt like to be pulled away from the clutch and motor as much as just lifting the motor out with no clutch connected to the flexplate

This is such a fucking hassel. I bought a motor of this guy off of the board cuz i blew mine and i had a shop pull it and they dont have the room in the garage anymore for my car sitting there since i never got the motor i was suposed to so they put it back in, and i drove it puffing smoke and oil going all over the damn road back home into the garage and now i am stuck pulling it. fuck, lol. oh well, i need to learn anyway. okay so i guess i will put out the tranny with it. so, how do i get the axles and whatever else out to pull the tranny out with it? i am replacing the clutch with a spec stage 2 or 3 and i have a bad synchro cuz its tough getting into 2nd gear so i will have that fixed while its out (how much you think that will cost cuz i dont think thats a DIY project). thanks for the help. so far im going by terry's list on what to do but how do i get these axles out when its time to.

um yeah. I was wondering, weren't you the guy who was suppose to us get a great deal on thos custom door hinges for the lambo conversion?

I've pulled with the tranny and without. Several times. I say leave the tranny in there. run4cvr and I got her out last time with the UDP still installed in less than 3 hours. I'll be sure to start the stopwatch when the new engine is ready to go in. I'm shooting for turn over in less than 4 hours. (Have to figure time to track down all the bits that have been scattered about over a month now). :P

Do you HAVE to remove the axles to get the tranny out with the motor?

The only wiring on the tranny is the speed sensor and back up lights right? once I disconnect though, is there anything else I need to unbolt or disconnect from it when it comes out with the motor.

aww sweet jesus!! i was going to refrain from making any comments but in this post but OH MY GOD!!!!! i see this as the first of MANY really increasingly stupid, assinine questions to come with this dip shit as he tries to do this rebuild.

Yes you do have to pull the axles. You have to remove them from the hubs, then pull them out of the tranny. It might take a lil to get them oout of the tranny, I used a pry bar. Also remember, there maybe a mess when you pull the axles, so be prepared.

Just take your time so you soak in what youve done and can remember how to put it back in. Also since youve never done this, LABEL EVERYTHING!!! Even the car itself :)

ya i have been labeling all the sensors and shit and all the vac lines and what not. tomorrow starts the fun!

DON'T FUCK WITH THE TRANNY MAN.

Seriously. If you try pulling with the tranny in there and you get the engine out without it, great. If not, you can always reconnect the bell housing bolts and try taking the tranny with it.

Just make sure you pull the crank pulley (UDP or OEM) your first time, and have a cherry picker/hoist ready. Undo your motor mounts, remove the header (or lower half if you're still stock) and then undo the bolts that hold the block to the bell housing and the four bolts on the flex plate. VERY EASY TO DO!

Get under the car and drop the oil pan. If you look to the tranny, you will see a little plate that is held on by the clutch actuator and a single 10mm bolt. Remove them and the plate comes off, giving you perfect access to the four flex plate bolts. Take out the starter and have a friend with a pry bar manually advance the flex plate until you can see the bolts you need to get to. Take them out. After this, when the engine is ready to come out, you just need to wiggle it back and forth a bit to clear the bellhousing on the tranny side and a couple vac lines on the fender. YOU CAN DO IT. If not, just lower it back down, install the bolts that hold the block to the bell housing and get under the car with a pry bar and begin using every curse word you know (and some you'll make up) trying to pry the damn CVs out of the diff. Get ready to buy another 3 bottles of $15/bottle tranny fluid too. It stinks like ass, and will get everywhere. You have to drain the tranny for that one.

If you're ready to pull it with the tranny, then trying without and ending up having to pull it with the tranny isn't such a bad thing, now is it? :P

Also a small short cut with the axles.

some axles are stuck in the Hubs and without a puller you wont be able to get them out. If this happens its ok just separate the lower ball joint and comression arm from the body. This will allow you to pry the axle out of the trans and pull outwards on the axle jut enough to clear the trans. I have done this with mine before i bought the puller.

In case your interested Snap-on makes a nice puller for forcing the axles out in case they get frozen for 70.00 and it is built really well and designed for some abuse.

what he said, dont fuck with trying to get the axles out of the hub, major pain in the ass. they DO have to come out of the trans tho, duh

seems to be 50% saying keep tranny is, and the other saying pull it with the motor. it would be much easier i would 'think' leaving the tranny in so then i dont hafta fuck with the axles at all. then i wouldnt have to fuck with the shift cables and that shit too. i am soo undecided on what to do.

Here's where I am at now:
All electrical wires, sensors plugs removed and pulled to side.
Throttle cable and what not all off.
All vac and emission lines pulled to side.
Coolant and oil drained.
Intercooler pipes removed.
Battery, battery tray and washer reservoir removed.

Not a WHOLE lot more. Hoping to get it out within the next 2 weeks. Its hard only working on it an hour a night on it. What should the final decision be? Leave in the tranny or bring it out. To me, i think it would be easier to leave it in again like i said so i dont hafta fuck with all the axle shit and shift cables and all the garbage ya know. I have 50/50 people saying 2 diff things, lol. Everyone has their opinion and I am liking them and all the help here too. Thanks, keep me going please.

Ive pulled my motor twice. The first time I left the tranny in and that was fine, till it was time to put the motor back in, that was a bitch. The second time, I pulled everything out in about 10 mins. When it came time to put it back in, I had the motor in and the motor mounts bolted in under twenty minutes.

Your call in the end bro, just given you my war stories.

Didnt you say you were going to put in an aftermarket clutch of some kind? if so....its a LOT easier to do that with the engine sitting on the floor..as opposed to when its in the car, much easier re-attaching the tranny and getting evrything lined up with it out of the car. But thats just my opinion. Also, invest(if you already haven't) in a Haynes Manual for your car. Every question with regards to removing/installing and rebuilding the engine even is in there. great reference.

Hello. I have a Q. I am pulling my engine and I read this entire thread ,but I still sont know what the hell is going on. I have every thing unplugged and labled and drained but I am only swapping engines so I dont want to pull the tranny with it. But I didnt see any thin about pulling the engine without the tranny on an ATX. Is it hard and do you guys have any tips?

It's exactly the same. The only differenceis that the four bolts in the flexplate that go into my clutch go into your torque convertor. :thumbsup

You drain the oil.
You drain the coolant.
You disconnect all the wires from their sensors.
You remove all the accessory belts.
You unbolt and hang your accessories over the passenger side fender.
Remove the intake piping.
Remove the header/exhaust manifold (or at least disconnect it).
Remove the starter.
Drop the crossmember.
Remove crank/under drive pulley.
Drop the oil pan.
Drop the access panel on the bottom, engine side of the tranny.
Have someone use a crowbar to manually turn the flexplate through the starter hole while you break the bolts loose in the flex plate.

Break bolts that hold engine block to tranny loose.
Hang engine on hoist.
Remove front and passenger motor mounts.
Remove tranny bolts.
Carefully lift engine from bay.

Just like that! :thumbsup

It's even easier to leave the motor and tranny on the ground when you lift the car up on a hoist :)
