the college i go to has a bunch of titanium tubing that we are trying to use. the tube ranges from about a 1/4 inch to 2 inch diameter. the best idea i've had so far are strut bars. if you guys have any other ideas let me know. thanks

The cone on my subwoofer is made out of titanium :-)
I wonder if you caould make a roll cage out of it???

How about suspension pieces? Such as the upper A arm and the lower multi links? Or sway bars? It's lighter and stronger than steel, so it's good for any kind of structural pieces where you need more strength or if you want to lighten the car.

Also, exhaust piping! (take the corvette ZO6 as an example) How about a new steering rack? (we've used titanium for the steering rack in the FSAE car I help build)

Just remember, oil does not "wet" titanium. If titanium has to come into contact with il, then it has to be chrome plated. Otherwise the oil will just bead off.

The only bad thing about titanium is that its flexes and deflects alot. I have alot of machining experience with it and it sucks and is a pain to keep good tolerences. If you know what kind of titanium it is I could tell you the strength and what it can handle.

2% vanadium, 3% aluminum, 95% titanium. other than that, i'm not sure, like grade and stuff i dont know. the major limitation is that we cant weld it. we dont have the inert gas chamber to properly weld it. since titanium reacts with the atmosphere once you get it over 500 deg... about. the main project for the class is to make a recumbent bike, mostly using mechanical fasteners. if we have to weld it the we can but it takes a lot of argon. so anything i made for my car could'nt be welded. thats why i thought about the strut bars. just screws and bolts. i already have strut bars front and rear uppers but they are made out of aluminum. so i was just going to replace the bar part with the titanium. thanks for your input so far.

Well certain grades of ti. you can harden. Shoot off the top of my head I think it is grade 5. When you harden it that stuff has the same charateristics as stainless steel. I think if you can harden it then strutbars would be really cool.
