122020, Differences in 95's, and 96-99's

I was just wondering what the differences were between these years. I know the 95's have the cold air injection into the cat, but are their differences in the ecu's(obdI, obdII?) My 95 was built early in the year and it just seems like it has alot more pep that the standard 140 horses(not at the wheels, i know). Anyone?

Yes, i do beleive that the 95's are OBDI and 96 on are OBDII please correct me if i'm wrong. there are also several body style changes from 95-96 and 97-99.

I've also heard that the 1995 ECU is more responsive to or accepting of mods than the later obd2 ecu's; I've ridden/driven other cars of similar weight & power, and mine does seem to have a little more hutzpah than your average 140 hp car....

I know about the obvious differences with the car, i was just wondering about the ecu, motor, etc. Anyone else have any info?

as far as ecu's the 95 ecu is two parts whereas the 96-99 ecu is one piece. the motor is the same. 95-96 have the fuel pressure regulator in the engine bay, 97-99 have then by the tank. other than that, theres not many differences.

i think the fuel filter is too.

true: 97-99 fuel filter is in the rear by the tank.

*Also-late model 96's have the fuel filter by the tank, and can't use the actual 96 fuel filter. They need the 97 filter. Trust me :)

95s don't care about boost also, the MAP sensor doesn't freak out when it hits boost. I've never need a fuel cut defender or anything. 95s also have an econo AC setting I think. The ECU is smaller in the 95s. My 95 has always been slower than any other 2GNT I've driven I think because when i bought it the engine was already messed up. 95s supposedly have non-modular clutches but I've never heard of anyone having a non mod on a 95 yet. 95s have the fuel filter behind the engine on the firewall which is very annoying. Like they said the fuel reg is on the fuel rail. I believe the coil pack has a different connector than the 96+s ones also it's more like a neon coil pack. I think 95s are the only ones that have that big foil lookin heatshield behind the hood.

basically, almost the entire fuel system is different.. and the ECU's are different..

i have the econo mode, it kicks the ac on and off at certain rpms i think, and i have the heat sheild thing, and i heard the 95 blocks have a faulty block bolt that isn't drilled deep enough or something which causes a hg leak in some cars.the fuel filter is EASY to get at. what are you talkinga bout. like, three bolts to get the windshield washer out and there it is. I'd rather just pop my hood, and leave that washer thing out and get at it right there than have to lay on the ground looking up while dust gets in my eyes... and the pulsed air injection thing or whatever is taken off on mine anyways.

EDIT: just thought i'd post resurrect. its been a while.

Main bearings are notched differently in the 95s. Funny how I have a 97 car, but sport a 95 block and head. LOL. Soon, run4cvr will have a 96 with my entire 97 long block rebuilt in it. :P

How do you know when you have the econo setting on a/c. I wouldnt know since i never use it, but it would be nice to know.

when it's set to econo the LED on the A/C button will light up urnge. when its on full A/C it will light up green

push it in once, econo. push it in again, and it stays in farther, and is green. full time ac.

they 95 ecu's come in two varieties too. california and everyone else. the california ones are more conservative for emsissions sake. all the later years do not have a special cali version.

man this post is HELLA old dated:

hmm one thing that I don't think I put in there was that 95s have a low coolant light on the gauge cluster took me a while to figure out what it was.

Old post indeed. But, don't forget about the EGR. 95s allow you to block the EGR and keep the solenoid connected WITHOUT A CEL!!! A great benefit in the 95s.

What is the difference in the 95 MAP sensor, as opposed to later years. Why doesn't the ECU need the missing link to bypass the extra manifold pressure in them? Like in the 96-99??

do not post unless you are going to be helpful. There is a reason new users are told to search.

The 96-99 ECU will throw a code if the map sensor voltage exceeds 4.63v for more than 2 secs. When boosting a positive pressure, that is, anything over 0 psi will make the map sensor output at its max voltage, which is 5.0v. After 2 sec the ecu will throw a code, for some, it will even cut fuel. As far as which cars cut fuel and which ones dont, there is no criteria to know before-hand if yours will cut fuel or not. My 97 doesnt cut fuel at all, you just feel a small hiccup and CEL; other's cut fuel or buck violently.

The 95 ECU - The programmed OBD-2 parameters were rather basic, meaning the manufacturer did not have OBD-2 in its final stages of development before the govt required that obd-2 be programmed into the ECU. Make sense? 95 obd-2 was still in the development stages and as a result the ECU was not as touchy in regards to codes. The 95 ECU will not throw a code or react to positive pressure liek the 96-99 will. Now alsdo keep in mind there are some 96's that will act like a 95 in terms of the map sensor. My 96 Talon does not need a map sensor, i ran boosted for 2 years and never noticed any problems at all.

Kind of a long explaination but this should explain the difference to you.

Thanks for searching, this qyuestion will just add info to the post for the next guy.

What does the ECU do as a result to the higher voltage reading in 95s and early 96's then? To compensate for the extra pressure?

Thanks, you've helped alot!

The Ecu will add fuel till it hits a cutoff point or limit and it stops adding more fuel. If you look at fuel in terms of a curve (liek a slope in a sound frequency) the curve will level off like a table top and only add its predetermined max amount. Your Mixture will begine to lean out (since more air is entering the engine), this is why the FMU is used. It raises the fuel pressure; therefore, causing the injector to flow a higher amount of fuel. The FMU is really a prehistoric means of fuel management; however, it does work well for small amounts of boost.

So here is a question I am dying to know the answer to... Does my 1995 GS have OBDII so I can use a Palm equipped with OBD gauge? Or better yet, how can i figure out what it is on my own?

This is a really old thread. It was started in 2002! Your 1995 should have both an OBDI and OBDII port. It should also be able to communicate through either. A picture is shown below:

The system checks are not fully up to OBDII standards, so it is only considered compliant with OBDI standards. You can connect to the data port with an OBDII logger. A datalogger on laptop or Palm is an excellent tool to have.

i have a question i been wanting to ask, but didnt want to make a new thread about it. mine is a 96, built in october 95, it has both obd1 and obd2 ports to it, does that mean its a 95 ecu?

I was told when i was looking for my ecu that the 95 and 96 had the same interchange number and I am running a 96 ecu right now in my 95. I would think that the only difference is the programing for the pulsed secondary air injection/ the 95's were recalled for removal and was removed in 96 models. If you haven't changed it then you have a 96 ecu with a 95 wiring harness.

Sorry, for meanless bump. lol..

My 1997 GS was built in New Mexico, yes friends on the WESTSIDE lol..
She came with a carfax, original owners paid 21,995 for her. I gues they had her REPO'd, because in my paperwork on her she was at a few auctions, her last was in Butler,PA.

To me she drives better then talons/eclipse around my work. They can't touch dis lol..

I think when they built her out west they did goodjob, mine has an Transcooler/ and maybe a oil cooler as well.
Oh, damn you can't the piping of the trans.cooler but its behind the license plate. I should of took it off when taking this pic. Next time

Here's one closeup, of her. More are coming soon

I copied this from a post on this thread and was wondering where this is? I have a cel with a code 36 which is the pulsed secondary air injection system. I have also posted a new thread on this site asking for help. My car is a 95 gs eclipse.
As for the logger comment I tried to use my logger that i had for my 94 laser and it wouldn't work on the obdI plug but i took my car to autozone and had them to try and clear my cel and the obdII scaner worked great. I don't have an obdII cable to try the logger on this port.
