LOL ive been dirt poor for the last few weeks since i started school, i put gas in it like a week and a half ago, like many, my Fuel gauge doesnt work for shit, but i know how long i can run on how much gas, well today coming on from work .... Don't feel bad, mine is on 95% of the time too. Every once in awhile it decides to take a break, but comes right back the next day.

The low fuel light is activated when a thermistor in the tank is no longer covered by fuel and it warms up enough to change resistance and thereby trigger the "low fuel" light to flicker on. That's why you see it on and off dim for a few miles before it stays on constantly.

Please note the low fuel sensor is completely independent of the fuel level sender in the tank.

I can drive over 100 miles of normal city driving after the low fuel light comes on if I have too. Now that I am boosted and have a new fuel pump I don't let it get that low so I protect the pump and don't go lean under boost.

The fuel level sender can be modded easily to make your gauge read much more accurately when empty yet still read correctly when full.

Please remember this mod only adjusts the accuracy of the fuel gauge when the tank is getting low. It does NOT change the point at which the low fual light turns on. You would have to physically raise or lower the thermistor in the fuel tank to adjust when the low fuel light turns on.

This is the potentiometer I spliced into the wires under my back seat.

ok since we are on topic ... i always wanted to know... when i get to the point where the gas light starts to come on and off .. how many miles do i have (approximately) before i die ??

Depends on your driving habits really. If your consistantly mashing the pedal, then your gonna get alot less mileage. Where as if you drive like a little old lady, then you'll get alot more.

I know on my very first Eclipse ('97RS brand new, may it RIP), I didn't even know it had a 'low fuel' light (never came on before). Was a bit of an epiphany when I saw it for the first time on my '99. Our fuel level gauge has always been sh*t (across all my Eclipses, Avengers, & Sebrings).

The light comes on when there are 8 liters (roughly two gallons) of gas left in the tank, per my owners manual.

Man my gas gauge is always right on the money. I love my fuel gauge, compared to other shitty cars where if you take a hard corner it'll dip a lot or something, mine is rock solid, always pretty accurate. But I never really run it for a long time when the low fuel light is on so I can't say if I only get 10km or 100 and dont' really want to find out.

Ummm.....I said just that in my post.

When I first got the car I drove it until the low fuel light came on. I then took a 5 gallon can of gas with me and drove another 100 miles before it sputtered out. I pulled over, did the adjustment as outlined in the mod linked in my first post above so the needle reads "E" correctly and then re-filled and drove home.

NOTE: Driving until completely empty is not recommended for boosted cars and it's hard on the pump to run dry due to possible pump overheating concerns. I didn't mind doing this to my factory pump but now that my Walbro is in I treat it a little better.

Do you have ABS? I believe there's a way to have that code checked, but I may be wrong. Maybe the master cylinder's starting to go out. :shrug

Nope no ABS, and no codes either on the scanner. It's just odd, because I have excellent pedal pressure and the brakes stop on a dime.

As for the light coming on and how far you can go at that point, here's an easy way to figure it out...

1. Fill up the tank until the pump shuts off on its own.
2. Reset your trip odometer on the cluster.
3. Drive until the light first comes on, then go right to the gas station.
4. Fill the tank up until it stops again. Note the amount of fuel you pumped, this is how much you burned.
5. Divide the number of miles on the trip odometer by the number of gallons you just put in, that is your miles per gallon.
6. Multiply your miles per gallon by the number of gallons left in the tank when the light came on. This is approximately how far you could drive before you ran the tank dry.

I know Dino's manual might say 8L/2gal at that point, but I know my car has a 16.9gal tank and, when the light comes on for me, I rarely get more than 14gal to go in. I have always based my figures on my LFL (low fuel light, I guess) coming on when I'm at 3gal remaining. If I average 30mpg, I could *theoretically* go 90 miles at that point. Nice knowing you don't have to panic, though. :P

I doubt it has anything to do with your brakes. The sensor that lets it know when you put up and put down your ebrake is just probably worn. I have the same problem now, but I don't care cause the car rolls still lol.
