12181, best clutch for HRC stage II Posted by esi420, Jan-15-02 02:44 PM
I just got my howell bottom end kit and my HRC stage II is coming. I was wondering what kind of clutch I should get with this combo.
I have a 1995 Talon ESi, but the clutch is modular so I would also have to buy a flywheel. I think Im going to buy the Fidanza lightened flywhell from howell.
What clutch should I buy if I plan on running up to 15psi? On the HRC site they have clutches they recommend, but they are ~$600.
Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

when i read title.. i was going to reply and say just get the clutches that hrc recommends... because well, they tested their own turbo, and probably know what's best/most reliable..
but then i read you didn't want to spend the money.. so now i don't know.
er..
i think alot of people use ACT(?) and centerforce clutches?

Centerforce is cheaper and should hold up to Stage II. I think the best bet is to stick with your stock clutch until it goes and then worry about it. A lot of people last a long time on the stock clutch.

RRE made it easy. They have a detailed description of the clutches they carry, and the pros and cons of them all.
I think Im going to buy the ACT 2600 for $280. It seems like the best deal. Plus you get the license plate frame :)

Since when has ACT made clutches for our car?
and 15 psi is Stage 3 not 2.
I have a Clutchmasters Stage 3 which I like a lot but you may want to look at their Stage 4 that they have.

I oredred the stage 2 kit, but bought the howell bottom end kit too. As soon as I get a clutch, Im doing my fuel system up for stage 3. RRE has ACT clutches, but they dont specify 420a or 4g63. Im going to call them and find out.
How much did you pay for your CF clutch?

Yeah as far as I know ACT does not make clutches for us. I would go with Centerforce or Clutchmasters, but only aftter the stock clutch goes, or starts to slip because it can't hold the power. Our stock clutches seem to do a good job.

Well, ACT doesnt make an application for the 420a as far as I know, or I would buy one myself probably because I have always liked ACT products. I am going through the clutch delima right now also... I have had a Centerforce Dual Friction for 1 year now. And it's shot, with only 6000 miles on it I cooked it. It had always slipped from time to time under 20-25psi runs.... maby once every 8 runs or so, not real often. Then I did some tuning of the cam gears, added a lot bigger downpipe and exhaust, tuned the fuel maps, cranked up the boost and bam, more horsepower, more slippage... :-( That sucks. I guess I am getting the Clutch Masters Stage 4 because thats the best one I can find for our tranny's... and I think Clutch Masters carries a lightened flywheel also... Incase your clutch rivits eat into your stock one hehe

ATTN Super20g
I noticed RRE didnt have good comments about the CFDF. I plan on boosting to 15psi.
What stage clutchmasters do you recommend for this power level?
I am looking for a cost effective option to the HRC recommended clutch for the HRC 2. Do you know if their clutch is modular? If its not, Im buying a used flywheel from the mitsubishigraveyard and Ill go with the stage 3 clutch from HRC
I just checked the clutchmasters website and I cant get it to show me a clutch for our cars. When select our engine, it changes it to the 4g63 turbo engine.

Well, it is a little misleading on HRC's website, but the clutches they sell are actually Clutch Masters clutches.... boostin' 15psi, i would go ahead and go with the stage 4, you might be able to get by with a stage 3, but if i remember correctly, the stage 4 was actually cheaper, but i might be wrong. thats really the only option you have to hold boost, just dont get the senseless force...

Should I be looking for a neon clutch instead of one for our cars on the parts sites?
