My pcv valve just broke and I needed to drive the car out. So I simply replaced it with a 3/8" silicone heater hose because I thought any hose should work. But once installed, my car began shooting out a great amount of white smoke (it does before but not that much) and also a funny burning smell. What was happening? I'm just gonna get a new pcv valve, no big deal, but just wondering what caused that to happen, thanks

is the white smoke coming from the exhaust or the end of the PCV hose? either way, its probably a bad sign, but depending on where its coming from could narrow down the possible cause.

Time for a good ol' compression check!

Blown headgasket.


Pull head off and send head to maching shop to resurface and replace valvestem seals.

Go ahead and replace the piston rings while you're waiting for the head to come back from the shop.

And since you're turbo, find a thicker headgasket, and some ARP studs.

You sure about that? Oil burns blue. Water burns white. Fuel burns black. Any reason why you bumped a nine month old thread? Looking for something in particular? Question about how to best view the threads?

Actually, a blown turbo oil seal can blow what looks like white smoke from the exhaust when it is just barely burning oil. It will not smell sweet like coolant though. It will smell like burning oil. Also, if the car is owning blowing smoke at idle (and not while driving), there is a good chance it is the turbo oil seals.
