121683, AFX computer????
Posted by BoostedEclipse, Jul-25-06 09:49 AM
I have a 97 rst, and I was looking to see what other options I had regarding standalone systems besides megasquirt. I know megasquirt isn't quite a complete standalone, but, I was just checking out my options. I ran across the AFX computer on howell automotive for the 97 model eclipse. My question is does this computer act like a standalone type system or what? I'm new into the tuning of computers and fuel/spark, so I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this thing. If so please post me your comments. Thanks.

Search, and you will find...

It's more or less a "chip", they upgrade the firmware with the same code that many other people run. The rev-limiter gets increased, the timing is a little more advanced, and the mixture runs a little leaner. You can't tune it over the OBD port like you can with a DSMLink (4G63 only), you can't request your own specifications. If you are going to stay N/A and want an easy upgrade for the street then go for it, although many have complained that it takes a long time to get your ECU back as the actual upgrading is not done "in-house".

There was some discussion back in the day that, even with the timing advance, the AFX could be a nice thing to have on a turbo car, as it would push fuel cut back a bit, but I don't recall much more than that at this point. A search is definitely in order.

you want the megasquirt...not the afx unit.
or superchips ICON gives you timing control only..

There are TONS of options but what exactly to you want to accomplish by bypassing the stock ECU..??
fuel control?
timing?
rev limit?
etc...
