121675, o2 sensor cel won't go away? Posted by spartan, Jul-26-06 07:55 AM
Hey guys I have a question for you again. When I bought my car this weekend I drove it home about 100 miles with no issues. The first time that I started the car up after that drive I got a cel. I went to autozone; front o2 sensor, so he cleared the code at the store and I went home and fixed it. Great, drove to Cleveland, no problems, the next day I go out and get in the car, cel again, have it checked same thing (front o2 sensor), but he didn't clear it this time. So I go home disconnect the battery while I put in my cd player, start up the car, no cel, it just went away, didn't come back all that day or the next. But today I go out and start the car and guess what CEL!!! I haven't had it checked yet but my money is on the stupid o2 sensor, what could possibly be causing this? The o2 sensor that I bought was a bosch from autozone which I had to connect to the old sensor. I could tell that it had already been done once on that plug, so I cut it like 10 inches away from the plug (the previous splice was about 3 inches from the plug). I just connected the same colors that were on it, black to black, gray to gray, and then both of the whites. Now I was under the impression that it didn't matter which way the white wires were connected? If anybody has any ideas as to what is going on here I would really appreciate it.
Thanks, Travis

first things first. What kind of car and what mods?

The car is a 97 Talon ESi, with no mods at all. I have replaced the o2 sensor like I said, and also the air filter. This is my daily driver (my fun car is my 91 Galant VR4), so I plan on keeping this one pretty much stock. I just want to get good mileage on it, which I am (~30mpg right now). As an update also, when I installed my sub last night I disconnected the battery again and the cel was gone when I started it back up?

Sounds to me like you got a bum sensor. Chances are, if you got it from Autozone, it's got a decent warranty on it. I would take it in and try one replacement. If that doesn't work, you might have to get OEM. There are a number of places people on this forum have found OEM sensors at below dealer price.
Cheers to a fellow Gaylant owner! :thumbsup
195/2000 owner, here. Soon to be p-stock rally car. Wo.0t!

Well that kinda sucks if that is true, because I am 99% sure that I threw away the box and the receipt. Oh well, but here are some pics of my cars.

Even so, if you have the warranty, they should have the info in their system. If you don't call and ask them about it, you lose regardless.
I'm jealous. Yours are clean and both run. Only my Talon runs right now.

 ^^^ Cooler picture, imo. ;)

Don't worry Brian, the vr4 is 4G63 powered. They feel more at home on jackstands. :D edit: Oh yeah, like stated above, try an OEM sensor. you can get them below retail from JNZtuning.

Well actually my gaylant isn't running right now. I am waiting for some idiot to send me a different ecu, because my eprom fried a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully I can get the eprom fixed and have my chip installed before the shootout, but that isn't looking very hopeful at this point. And the talon looks clean from a distance. The hood isn't straight, passenger front fender is dull and looks terrible, the front bumper is scuffed up, and the interior and carpet is super dirty, especially the back seat. But oh well, it's a good daily, and that is all that I wanted. The light still isn't back on so I have my fingers crossed at this point. Thanks for your help guys.
