So I was contemplating putting on an oil cooler and I was thinking, when you drain the oil, what happens to the oil in the oil cooler? Does a lot of the oil drain out enough to damage valves in the oil cooling lines when you start the car? Reason I ask is when I started my car after doing an oil change, the pressure gauge did not rise right away due to the oil filter being new and empty of oil (the cooler is not installed right now). Now what happens when you have an oil cooler with a lot of extra lines and with the front of the car lifted, then some of the oil would drain back empty in the cooling lines that you added to the oil cooler? Then of course when you start the engine, instead of the oil filter being the only thing to fillup, the cooling lines would also need to be filled up as well, right?

I don't know about the cooler, I've thought about adding this to my cougar, but when doing an oil change, I've always filled up the oil filter before hand so there would be less lag in oil pressure.

Depending on how the lines are ran for the cooler would determin if it would drain or not, too.

I you could also unhook the coil and crank it over a few times to get the oil pumping before starting it.

Oh wow, I did not think about unhooking the coil. This is for my Z, and the filter is sideways, so filling the filter is out of the question.

I always "prime" when ever I do an oil change. A couple of turns w/o load wont harm a thing, parts are still covered in residual oil. Now if you start it and then you have the load of the combustion process....

Yes, priming is basically cranking the motor to get oil through it to 'prime' the system before you start it.

I've had an oil cooler for years and its always taken like 15 seconds to fill the oil cooler up because its so massive it makes me add another quart. Doesn't hurt it at all.

Anyway when you drain it and your take the filter off, depending on the position of your oil cooler (should be higher than your filter) it should drain out. Some oil coolers come with a drain plug or you can just take the adapter off and try to shake it or something.

I wouldn't worry about draining the entire core I mean there is dirty oil but that's why you change your oil right so that crap doesn't build up so hopefully your oil isn't so nasty.

I add oil to my filter before I put it on also I pour it to the top and wait like 5 minutes to let it soak into the paper and add more. That way theres oil in it when you start the car. If you really wanna be safe do what they said and prime the car b4 your start it up.
