121578, New engine questions Posted by gc8dc95, Aug-08-06 01:57 PM
Ok this isnt my first rebuild of a 420a....maybe 5 or 6. Anyways I have never had this problem. I decided to rebuild it to basically stock specs becuase I needed a car to get me around for a few months. I did .040" factory replacement pistons, resized rods, clevite bearings, clutchmaster clutch, pt style rockers and lifters, PD mechanical tensioner. Mods are UDP, 255 walbro pump, short ram intake, 55mm TB, OBX Intake Manifold, 4-1 Header, 2.25" exhaust, testpipe. Oh yea, the head has a 3angle and was milled .005".
Ok, when I start the car it take like 15sec or so of cranking to get it to start. It always starts though. When it idles it sounds like it has a lope. Like a big cammed v8. So at first I though timing, but it looks like the marks are on. Could this from the manifold?? Sensors?? Any ideas??
Also the emissions stuff such as EGR, canister, etc has been removed.
The car runs fine, I have drove it almost 2500 miles already and it gets 30mpg and has no problems cruising down the road, and runs fine other than a little rough at idle.
Sorry so long. Any ideas?? Are the two even related??

I still think it's timing, but the CLT might be suspect as well. They've been known to affect idle.

I had similar problems before I started my rebuild, and it did end up being my timing. It was off about 2-3 teeth.

Well I will double check timing again, and hopefully I will find the problem.

I was in the same boat just 10 minutes ago starting up my new rebuild.
I never fully plugged in the cam sensor and was getting a code. It would crank for at least 5-6 seconds and then fire.

Well it seems that all of you are right, for one I didnt plug in the cam sensor....lol. Two the timing was a tooth off. I must have been sleep walking while I was doing this one, I am makin newbie mistakes again. Oh well, I fixed the timing and plugged in the sensor, everything is good now.
Just one problem left, the timing belt likes to be on the outside edge of the gears. I have had this problem with every rebuild, both with PD tensioner and the factory one. Its not coming off, but I would prefer it centered. Any ideas??
I am using the correct torque specs and the bearings and things are new.

if you mean on the outside as too close to the vc then your ok because every 2gnt i have ever seen is like that and all that i have heard about are like that but if you mean your timing belt is over toward the passenger side of the car I have never heard that so hope someone can help.

It is towards the passenger side, like it wants to come off, but doesnt. It just chills there on the outside edge. ????????

could be your timing belt crank pulley could be out too much. I know your suppose to be able to fit a paper clip between the pulley and the oil pump.
I just went out and checked my timing belt (no cover i broke it when i burnt a valve) and its riding closer to the driver's side still got cam gear on each side though.
dang 5th or 6th rebuild!? you must be stacked because I just did my 2nd and i don't wanna do it again.

I got the timing gear on the farthest I could, it is close the oil pump. There is almost no gap.
Ya gotta love rebuildin the ol' 420a.......lol

Does the belt overlap the edge or does it come right up to it? I have seen it on many 420a'a (mine included) that run right on the outside of the gears. Never has been a problem, so I never looked into the reason. Oddly enough, on my current rebuild, it lands right in the middle.

There is a small, less than 1/8" overlap. It doesnt look to be touching anything, or hurting anything. It stays right there and doesnt move, but I dont like it on the edge like that. Maybe I will have to take it apart again and make sure everything is flush and lining up again.
This is weird, maybe I got careless from doing so many times.....

Yeah, I wouldn't like that either. The ones that I have had/seen are just pushed in that direction, not over the edge. Obviously it is in the geometry (duh) but where? I would (as you say) take it back down and check. I could guess at the bottom pulley gear not being pushed far enough on. Directing the belt to the edge of the pulleys.
