121464, 420A high / low Idle
Posted by zyous, May-07-05 01:13 PM
Well my car has been in the shop for the past month because of idle problems.

I was driving home from work (no previous signs of any kind) and my car starts idleing at a constant 2k. Then about 10 minutes down the highway it jumped up to 3k constant idle, i noticed as i exited the highway and kept the car in neutral. 5 minutes later just a few blocks from home, the car is idleing at 4K.

Now the wierd thing is, when the idle builds up to idle, if i tap the gas pedal it comes back down quickly to normal idle then rapidly goes back up to 4K. I opened hood, and noticed a very loud (or what seems to be) leak. I took off my intake, and the throttle is closed, BISS is fine, tension on the throttle is fine. I covered up the throttle body complete and still finds air from somewhere( thinking leak) to keep ideling at 4K.

Took the car in a month ago. cant find a leak... i get word the car now idles too low, then sometimes alternates too high or too low to run. I bought a ECU, nothing...

I'm clueless and i believe these retard technitions are too... So please guys any help would be apreciated.

Have you replaced the IAC/ISC(idle air/speed control motor)?

No i haven't replaced that. But i get my car back Monday so i guess i could mess around with that. How can i determine if that is the problem or not? I dont want to buy alot of parts if i dont need them.

A multi meter and a Haynes/Chiltons book will tell you the official way to test. But what you can do is un-hook the battery, put your car in the on position then get to the engine and touch the battery wire (use the neg. wire) to the battery terminal. Listen for a click at the IAC. If you hear a click then it is working (but that doesn't mean that you don't have a piece of crap stuck on the plunger). What I would do would be to take the IAC out, clean out the channel and plunger, check to see if the plunger goes out when you put power to it. That answers your previous question but it does not necessarily solve your problem.
Do not bring your car back to that garage. This is a problem that any competent DSM mechanic can probably solve relatively easily (with a little bit of time). They should not START at changing out the ECU! If you are unsure of doing it yourself, find a DSM mechanic.
There is a whole alphabet soup of things this could be; IAC, TPS, MAP, ECU (though you already changed that). It could even be a broken or corroded wire. As for the change in idle that is probably just your ECU trying to adjust to the information that it is getting from it's sensors. Normally for a situation that you are talking about I would lean toward IAC or TPS but at 4k that does sound like a vacuum leak. Just my $.02

Check the vacuum hose that runs off of the throttle body to the evap canister. that rubber line gets brittle and can break easy. Also check to see if your hose to the brake booster is leaking. The PCV hose can also be cracked.

I think that it is a vacuum line since you said that you can actually hear the leak. you wouldn't be able to hear the leak if the idle solenoid was stuck open because it draws air in from the intake. That would mask the noise.

check the vac lines behind the intake manifold too.

Ok.. craziest thing... I got my car back about a week ago, but now the problem isnt tha its ideling high, now its ideling too low. To low that it cuts off... Something is seriously wrong now... i can start the car and rev it up, but it sounds ugly almost like something is caught in the exhaust, and it wont rev up past 4.5k. Spark Plugs are good... I have no clue what to do. The engine while being rev'd up to stay on, almost sounds like lawn mower.

Is the check engine light on? It would surprise me if the ECU wasn't throwing a code based on how you're describing it. Get an OBD scanner on there and check the codes.

It sounds like some sensor is bad or unplugged or something like that. Make sure the sensors are all plugged in properly and don't have bad wires. If that all looks good you'll probably have to start testing each component. But like I said, if its running that bad then the computer should be able to tell you what it thinks is wrong.

I took the car into another shop, because I just dont have time to work on it myself, and because i dont want to jack anything up even worse... anyway, the new shop said, the throttle body gasket was leaking, so their going to silicone it up, they also said the tps was bad, so they replaced that, then it went sky-rocket back up to 4k RPM's... thats a good sign i guess... So they checked the EGR and said that was bad, So now they're looking for the part, I have no idea how much one of those bad boys is going to cost me, But from what I described, does it sound like they might be right this time?

Ok well i just called the dude again, and this time he said its a vacuum leak. Thats what everyone has been saying originally, but no one can find it, its the leak coming from no where... Is there some tubes, that no one knows about? what else can be leaking,

INFO: When the car is running (4K rpms) we complete took off the intake and covered up the throttle body with my hand, but it didnt bother it at all, it still was ideling that high, and its very loud. Its obviously a leak. But from where?

First, the revlimiting at 4K or so is usually a MAP sensor problem. Verify that your dumbass mechanics plugged it back in.

Second, the manifold is two pieces and i have seen gaskets fail at the manifold -> head location, and at the upper -> lower manifold location. test all around the manifold with some non-flamable bake cleaner. When you spray on or near the leak, the engine will begin to sputter and may stall.

If its reving to 4K on its own, that's a big damn leak. How could someone NOT find that?

Ok well this guy managed to find and fix the problems... First off, the egr line had two holes in it, then as my RPMS were way up like that my TPS went bad so it went way low, so he replaced the that, and welded the egr line. It should be good to go. getting it today. Thanks everyone!!

Well I went to pick it up, DarkOne you hit it right on the money, they had to replace the MAP sensor, and the lower intake manifold gasket was leaking...

Wow! good call DarkOne

Great thread I was curious about mine also, but didn't know to ask the right questions "good things come who waits"

When I'm at a red light/stop sign she idles at around 900 to 1500 rpm's. When I'm slowing down while driving its at 2000 rpm.

Darkone is this accurate, I'm not sure. I had my timing done wwhen I changed my water-pump. They owner/Master tech. told me that they had to file a tooth on the gear a little abit. I didn't destory it completly thank god.

Well, later my timing will be redone again and will use your tipr from this thread thanks again.

gotta crash.. dalesmitsu
