hey guys just wanted to post this message i got from partsdinosaur.com reguarding a tensioner i asked about 4 months ago, i have since paid the crazy dealer price to replace my factory one when i did my timing belt but for all who are ready to do it now heres a new one that im sure will be worth the savings

That's a weird looking tensioner, I wonder how's it installed and the reliablity versus a hydraulic one.

It has been in testing for more than a year in Canada where the tensioner system is produced. I have a "sell sheet" that shows some graphs regarding 'tight-side belt tension' comparisons between the mechanical and the hydraulic systems and the results tend to lean toward the mechanical tensioner being better for the belt and the engine from low to high RPM. (I think they are trying to point out that the hydraulic system actually loads the timing belt way too hard at higher RPM which will probably reduce belt life) I hope to have a scan of this information available soon.

Looks like the srt-4 tensioner on a bracket. I would perfer it over a stock one.

That's really interesting! I've used that parts dinosaur guy for the pulleys, he's awesome for customer support and getting your stuff out quickly. Keep us updated on how the mechanical tensioner works for you.

Hmmm, it seems to me that using a mechanical tensioner means that it will be the only tensioner you will ever have to buy again, as it will not wear out like a hydrolic kind.

i want to know if this thing will actually work seeing im about to rip into my head and whatnot, it looks like it could work but im so use to using the other one...iono..

That's Alain's 2.4L motor.

The tensioner linked above looks exactly like an SRT4 tensioner on a different bracket. I would buy it over the 2GNT hydralic setup in a heartbeat simply for the ease of install.

good info! I didn't even know a mechanical tensioner existed. I like the idea ALOT more than the hydraulic setup. is this sticky worthy, maybe?

Alain, How was fitament? Any modifications required? What did you do about/with the hydraulic tensioner?

Asking cuz I have 2 engines to get running once I get home from Iraq, and that tnesioner conversion set up looks like a great deal for the $$ spent. Plus you eliminate the additional tension that the hydraulic tensioner puts on the belt. Definately would like to do this reguardless of any mods necessary. Just trying to get an idea so I can be prepared for what I am going to have to do.

my engine is the hybrid 2.4 engine that you see on the pictures
it's not a 420a :)

but i worked on a neon with the new mechanical tensionner
it was just like my 2.4 you unscrew the bolt and you unlock the tensioner, once you are done with the belt you lock the tensionner and tight the bolt

it should be a direct fit on the 420a since it's the same short block

I have mine installed on my car now...cake to install, remove hydraulic tensioner and bracket, then bolts right on :thumbsup

Yeah it was easy UNTIL I tried to slip the new belt over it. It eventually went on after I put my ass into it...Now its making tensioner and or belt noise not to menion that the belt walks a little bit when its running....so Im gonna go to Napa and get the hydraulic setup and red threadlocker tomorrow....

I'm interested to know more about the belt walking because I'm getting close to ordering this.

With the SRT4 tensioner on my 2.4L, the belt sat on the edge of the gears and didn't track right when turning by hand, but as soon as i started the car for the first time it moved to the middle of the gear and tracked exactly like it is supposed to. *shrug*

I'm definitely in the need of new timing equipment and $130 sounds mighty tempting!

Also, with those kits, what's the quality of the belt? I know some people here won't use anything other than Mopar. Is the quality the same?

Yessir.

I think i would like my timing belt tight as could be and not be able to bounce around at all. Spring = Bounce

Greater minds than yours have seen it, used it, and called it good. I'd rather have the tensioner be able to relax slightly under a sudden load than not and have the belt snap.

Im ordering mine now. I was contemplating getting the belt and hydraulic from the parts store or this. Now im convinced.

sorry to bring this back from like 2 weeks ago, but im thinking about redoing my timing, and putting my cam gears back on, and getting it tuned once again, and want to replace the tensioner, but my friend tried the mechanical one out and said it never put enough tension on her belt, and she said i could have it if i want it, and will take it to use, but im afraid that the lack of tension might make my belt jump... or is it supposed to be loose like that all the time?
