121157, Blue smoke questions help please.. Posted by kinkopy, Oct-06-06 08:54 AM
Ok i searched before i posted and i got a couple of questions. I just finished on a engine swap and a rebuild. And I tried to start the engine for like 10 min's and it wouldnt start. I knew it was getting fuil. So i used some starter fluid in the intake and it still wouldnt start so i sprayed alot in and boom it flew flames out the intake and i had to blow a fire out but then it started right after that.. The thing is its blowing out blue smoke and it got lighter after about 20 minutes but its still blowing it out i havent tried starting it again yet I dont have my exhaust pipe hooked up. Could it be that its running to rich because the exhaust pipe sensors arent reading ne data ?

Yes. Why don't you get your exhaust put back together and then see what happens? :shrug

Sounds like some oil might be getting in there somehow... I trust that you inspected the valve stem seals are either new, or were not causing any problems before the rebuild. The rings should be new and shouldn't be causing any problems. How about that head gasket? Are you sure you installed it correctly and torqued down the head to the right specs?

I'd go out and drive it hard for a bit and shutdown. Let it cycle a few times and put 60-100miles on it and then see if it's still smoking.
Rings don't seat in 20 minutes of idling, but they should be mostly seated after the first 50 miles. I didn't read the original post but were the cylinders bored and honed? Did you assemble the engine?
Or it's your valve stems seals as said above. :P

Well i didnt change the rings or change the valve stem seals. I had a extra head and took it to a cylinder head shop and have them liquid and presure test it. I had the engine open for a while. And i poured alot of oil into the top of the cylinders to keep em from rusting maybe that might be the smoke ?

Could be but it should wear off fairly quick.
Go drive it man. It's the only way to tell. If your sitting at a stop light 2 2 minutes tap the gas before you start going and if you get a puff of smoke it's the seals in the head. You should have changed them cause they come with a gasket kit. But maybe you didn't get a gasket kit :P

it doesnt smoke at all until it warms up then it smokes. it doesnt seem like a oil smoke or water smoke though.

At this point I would thorougly go over the entire engine looking for any leaks whatsoever. You never know what you could find and it doesn't hurt to check anyway.

Probably cause he was to lazy to pull the springs and shit out. pfft.
I'd pull the head and bring it back to him.

What other smoke is there? Have you noticed your oil level dropping at all? You said it was blue and that is oil. +1 for taking the head back to him.

+2 for getting the block at a minimun honed and new rings and taking the head in and having the valve seals replaced and the head milled flat...
do it right once, or do it over again...
