Hey, I'm trying to work a power steering pump I just installed today. We pulled it up off the ground and rocked the wheel back and forth for about 20-30 minutes. Then we took it for a spin.

It turned alright but still not the best it could have been. How long does it usually take for this to happen?

Ok, I'll reply (but sorry, no real help).

I've never had to replace mine, even though it whines really bad I won't replace it.

I'd say to leave the car running and slowly add fluid, roughly the amount that was lost when you changed the pump. I might be wrong though.

Don't really have to bleed it... just make sure the reservour is full and go.

It's full but it's really really not easy to turn like it once was.

I put the top bolt with the number 8 on it in vertical position so the hole in it would allow flow, but it's still not easy to turn. Any suggestions?

To bleed it you just have to turn lock to lock 2-3 times.

Dang, there must be something wrong then, because we've done it way more than that and it's still hard to turn. We used ATF+4 and it's full.

Hows that Rack? Any leaks? Was the pump new, rebuilt or used?

I still have yet to understand where people get the idea to use ATF in their PS systems. I've never used it, nor has anyone I've known personally. I use power steering fluid. :shrug

I searched in the forums and actually came across DR1665 thread and he claims he used/uses ATF+4. What's the manual call for? I don't have the book on me.

Some manuals do state that it is OK to use ATF where PS fluid is not available... I dont know if ours does, its been a while. As far as using it, Hydraulic fluid is just that... now as far as conditioners and modifiers...I dont even want to go into that one.

This is what you do, its easy as shit.

Lift up the front end of your car. Fill up the reservoir, turn the wheels lock to lock and check the fluid. It's bled.

Reason for lifting the front, is to prevent balding your tires or wearing a flat spot.

Use PS fluid, and check your belt tension. Should have about 1/2" of deflection in the middle of the longest section of the belt.

All that's been done. I actually had it lifted and turned it for 20 minutes back and forth.

Belt is ok.

I'm going to need a different fluid I guess.

I know the pump is pumping (because we were adjusting the top bolt and saw it pumping the fluid out), but it seems like it's a lemon.

I'm gonna try to get another used one on the way, and if that doesn't work, I'll just get a shorter belt and try to run AC only, or shell out the cash for a new one from Mitsu.
