120665, 12 hours to find the answer. Posted by Xtremez, Dec-31-69 06:00 PM
I know...and you're all going to hate me for this, but I literally have 12 hours to come up with an answer.
Friend has a 2gnt Eclipse. All kinds of motor issues. Coolant leaks from ..well, i imagine lots of places. Oil coming out everywhere, its a mess. She pulled up here about 20 minutes ago, and I told her to get that car outta the parking lot and into her driveway and let it sit. Unfortunately, she has no other vehicle, so she asked me for help.
Im thinking its easiest to just replace the whole damn motor. I could be wrong. I dont mess with these cars too much at all. Some mech. told her to drop a 4g63 in it. The other said pay 2g for a 420A engine.
I came back here hoping you'd show some mercy on me due to my situation at the moment, and perhaps shed some good grace upon me.
I got no clue where to start. If 4g63 is possible, I wouldnt complain. I know them a bit, and I can get those cheap. Its the damn Chrysler things that seem to be a bit harder to find.
Im in the far South Suburbs of Chicago too. So that doesnt help me much.
Any help guys? Once again, Im sorry, but if I had a few weeks, I'd use the search feature and spend a few days researching and not come off like another annoying newb.
thanks in advance...
Todd

i got your mercy right here... *shakes fist* }(
12 hours is more then enough time to search and find out that a 4g63 is not an option for a 2g. don't ask why it won't work. just no.
while there may be coolant & oil "everywhere," you need to do a quick eval and see if there is a likely source. there is no reason to jump and get a $2k block if we're talking a gasket here. spending that much on a stock 420a engine is crazy anyway.

hey, thats a good enough answer for me.
She called me about 10 minutes ago, and there was a loud knock, a boom, and then oil everywhere on the driveway...
...soooo yeah. I think we can call it a night. Now I have a bit more time to just search for a 420A engine.
And anyways, I wasnt planning on staying up all nite searching for answers. I got work at 6am. She just said she would call me at 10 tomorrow, so I figured itd be nice to have some info for her.
thanks though.

Originally posted by Xtremez there was a loud knock, a boom, and then oil everywhere on the driveway... And another 420A goes to heaven. Sorry. Smoke is one thing. A few drips is another, but "Knock, boom, mess" = hole in oil pan or block, imo.
You might have an answer tonight, but unless you've got a spare block ready to go right now and experience with this motor, that car's not going anywhere for at least a week and $1500.
EDIT: Be sure to take one of the fucked up con rods to the guy who suggested the swap and shove it up his ignorant ass. :)

Go to car-part.com and find a complete 420a Chrysler engine out of a 95-99 Eclipse, Talon, or Avenger.
You'll be paying $600-1000 and the swap takes about 2 days the first time you do it, 6 hours if you're good.
The old engine isn't worth fixing anymore.

ouch sounds like she windows the block or something. I woulda said look and see if it has oil because that's one obvious thing to look for, if you don't know how to trouble shoot it I would get it towed to a repair shop and have em look at it. It could be anything but you probably want to find out where all the fluids are coming out of first.

I got a stock bottom end, and would be willing to travel. It's all put together cept for the oil pump, pan, and you'll need a head. Lemme know if your interested.
