air intake lets your car breath better. More air means more horse power. and intakes come with better air filters wich lets them breath easier. plus the intake makes your car sound mean. if i were you i would get a cold air intake. colder air means more horse power. plus with the cold air intake (atleast with 95-96 cause of holes in bumper don't know about others) it kind of doubles as a "ram" air. which means air gets rammed into the filter then into the intake then throttle body and so on. i think i got most of it. and if your looking for cold air intakes (CAI), look around the board. there are a lot of people selling theres becuase there going turbo and stuff like that.

45 is dirt cheap for an intake. But watch out, most places charge 15 to 25 bucks for shipping and handling. I spent 45 bucks just for an air filter and adapter with stock piping back in the day.

Injen is a pretty popular intake, that's what I have. I got mine from www.roadraceengineering.com from $145. I wouldn't pay more than $45 for the filter, but you should expect to pay over $100 for a new intake.

what about K & N? How do they compair?
|
11970, RE: Air Intake Question.... Posted by 99GS, Jan-14-02 12:33 PM
I don't think K&N makes an intake "system" for our car (just the drop-in and universal cone). I just bought the universal 3" cone and strapped it onto my existing intake arm, not much different than an aftermarket short air intake (as pictured above).
My setup...

well i have a iceman CAI.. i have no probs with it..
everyone asks which is better aem, iceman or injen
well think about it
2 are metal one is powdercoated plastic
granted the aem is coated with that heat stuff.. but its still metal and soaks up heat much more then plastic
so id have to say iceman lives up the name.. ICE
mine was 200 a long time ago. i think they are still about 175 ish.. not a bad intake.. 2 pieces so you can rock cold air or just a regular short ram
unlike your injen and aem
and KN does make intakes now.. they have them for the rsx, wrx, is300 and others
its a gray tube
oh yea the iceman has a kn filter too..

Where did you get this, and who makes it. It looks like it might work for the 2.4l Spyder GS engine also.

I got a cheap cold air intake off ebay for $99 plus $16 shipping. It's a good intake for the money. Now I just have the stock airbox with a K&N and the silencer removed and I noticed NO difference on the butt dyno.

Basically just 2 blue 2.5 inch pipes and 2 rubber connectors and a Fake K&N air filter.

Yeah it looks fine. It is powdercoated blue just like the AEMs. It fit fine too.

There are a ton, which one.

11979, RE: Air Intake Question.... Posted by 97_ESi, Jan-16-02 07:07 AM
Is it that much better to buy a short ram intake or just do this:

Is the stock piping versus the AEM/Cheap Brand/Whoever piping gonna be that much better or is it really the filter?
I was thinking I should just pick up the filter instead since I got a Magnaflow exhaust coming Friday or tomorrow if I'm lucky.
<EDIT> ALSO VERY IMPORTANT - A universal 3" cone filter will fit my Talon N/T right??? For SURE?
Thanks, Mike.

11980, RE: Air Intake Question.... Posted by Skeletor, Jan-16-02 07:19 AM
The filter is the big part, but the smoother lines of the aftermarket pipes gives a smoother less turbulent air flow. The smoother the inside of the pipe the better airflow, the stock pipe cause all sorts of turbulence slowing down the air charge.

I run a AEM CAI and I relly like it. One other option that you may have is to look in the "MODS" section of this site and there is a part about making a CAI out of PVC pipe. We did this on a friends car and them we painted it and it does work well. It does not look quite as good as a bought unit but it only cost $15 plus the filter.
