Hey everyone. I recently bought a 1995, 5 speed talon esi that has a bad headgasket so its been in my driveway just sitting for about a week. When i bought it, we drove it onto the car dolly and it started well. I brought it home, pushed it into its parking spot where it has been sence. It has an alarm, but i got tired of it because the battery in the key chain was dead so i cut the wires to the speaker and hooked it up a few days later when i got a new battery for it. well i went to start it today and when i try to turn it over nothing happens. I can hear a click every time turn the key. It sounds like it is coming from the interior fuse compartment but im not to sure. Any ideas?

I found another click lol. it seems to be coming from inside the dash center concel.

check your battery and the wires going from the battery to the starter, if you're getting a click the switch is working but you don't have enough juice to get the starter to kick over. sitting cars can drain the battery down, and our cars are notorious for having crappy wires from the battery to everything that get corroded and then won't pass power.

first grab a volt meter and check the battery
then check the positive and ground wires and that there tight and arent corroded

then turn on your headlights and try and start the car. if the headlights or the dash lights dim then its a battery issue.

if they dont dim then id check 3 things
1. the WHITE connector that comes off the main wire that connects the battery to the starter. it connects 2 harnesses together and can sometimes come loose.
2. the BLUE connector on the starter itself. i noticed this one has come loose on me a few times. i finally disconected it, cleaned it good, then lightly closed the gaps on the connector so it would grab tighter on the starter.
3. if you still have the EGR pipe follow alon that and make sure it hasent burnt a hole through any harnesses and is shorting out.

I don't believe that I had to just quote myself.

I thought i said that i checked all of the wires going to the starter.

trust me, cut em open, I keep my terminals pristine, cleaning them at the first sign of corrosion, I had no signs of bad cables. car wouldn't start, just clicked. took out the battery, charged and tested, click. took out the starter, took it to pep boys and had them test it, spun perfectly. checked relays, click. finally push started the car by myself (way not fun, I'm lucky to have all my limbs!) got to the stereo shop I worked at, had my security system removed, click. finally my buddy Dave pulled out a razor blade and sliced open my cables. white/green stuff all the way through. replaced the cables with some monster 4gauge and fired right up faster than I have *ever* had the car do before.

check the wires again.

Alright, where about was the click coming from? but im going to go take a look now. Thanks. And today i put in a new fuse for the radio or interior lights, i dont remember which one. but when i looked in the car a ton of smoke was pouring out. a red with some silver striped wire is now melted to shit. Where abouts does that wire come through the firewall?ill need to replace it and i cant seem to find it right now. Its light red with a silver stripe.

Maybe just replace the "I" in your sentences.. and put a "We".. get someone that knows about the car, and let them help ya...
you keep messing with the wires , you can dmg more thing before you can get it fixed

nobody around here has an eclipse or talon so i might just pay the mechanic a bit more to fix what ever the hell is wrong.

Well it seems the "click" is coming from this relay or atleast in the area of it.The previous owner took the cover with him, so i dont know what relay it is. this relay seems to get warm, and when i turn the key on it seems to be the one doing the clicking. Also, now my alarm is about four times as quiet as it use to be, and runs alot faster than before. Even with being boosed by my other car. I think im just going to bend over and let the mechanic fix it all.

If all of your lights, inter/exterior turn on. your starter is good if not replace it. Its in an easy spot to get to it, next your headers, most cars are underneath. This is a plus for all DSM's here

Well all the wires seem to be good. I tried another battery and tried using booster cables from my other car and it still just makes that tick, I spend a long time on the alarm, and it has nothing to do with the alarm. So im compleatly confused. There are a few wires hanging under the dash, ill get some pics up in a little while. This is really starting to bother me. I still get that single "Click" that im pretty sure is coming from the fuse box, but all of the fuses seem to be in good shape. the sound might just be coming from that area though.

Here are some pics. not sure what any of them are for except for a ground wire that is hard to see in the first pic that is raped around the clutch pedal right now. i have a fealing that the one lying on the ground has something to do with a sterio. the car doesnt have p. doors or windows.

The two sockets in the second pic are really close to the centre concel and i dont wee any wires near them. I dont understand why the car would start well one day, but after doing nothing to it it wont start after a week. and a full battery charge/new battery/ jump

Ok, Sometimes u just got to press the clutch pedal to start the car :p <---If that helped ...please post something saying it helped :p....

other than that on your last image i can see where OBD-II scanner connects

Whats this you call "Clutch" :shrug Well yeah, im really not sure anymore. i might bring it to a shop :cry

The alarm probably had a kill switch in it. You cut the wires to disable the alarm, but the kill switch it still active.

If you are getting a click in the center console that is probably the starter relay that is located under where your radio is located.

it sound more like its coming from the fuse compartment. but ill deffinatly take a look.

I found that the same "click" is made when i turn on and off the rear defroster. i dont know if this is any help.

That wouldn't be related to the starter relay.
