118881, vibration in gas pedal and shifter Posted by MattitudeV1, May-31-07 05:04 AM
When driving over 3000 rpm in any gear, I get this vibration feeling on the gas pedal. And recently, it's gotten worse, anything over 2500 rpm will cause a vibration in the pedal, the shifter and sometimes the steering wheel. And the higher I rev/increase rpm, the worse the vibration gets. I can hear something shaking in the engine bay.
Is this most likely a bad motor mount issue or something else? I had the same issue last year (just not as bad) and the vibration went away after the end roll stopper was replaced.

Sure as hell sounds like a motor mount problem.

motor mount or possibly a cv axle about to let go. I've had that happen on an integra I used to have, wouldn't click or grind, just vibrated like hell especially under acceleration. didn't have much of a boot left.

I think if it was a motor mount It would vibrate like hell when at idle too, but you never know.

Is it possible for a clutch to unbalance itself over time? My mechanic said he thinks its the balance of the clutch, because when the clutch was first installed it was out of balance and had to be sent back. Then it was fine after it was rebalanced.

Is it a stock modular clutch assembly or a PT seperated clutch and flywheel?
Edit: have you even put the car in the air to look at anything?

It's a stock modular assembly.
No, it's at the shop right now.

ok, cool. hopefully the shop will help you sort it out, I've never heard of a clutch/flywheel becoming unbalanced. warped yes, I've seen that with my own eyes. AFAIK if it's not unbalanced to begin with it shouldn't be able to become unbalanced unless something were to actually break off (trust me you'd notice, that tends to put holes in stuff, quite loudly). warping feels like a nasty vibration when you're engaging and releasing the clutch

What about first checking if it's the brakes/rotors? Does it do it while parked and revving over 3k?

brakes, unless they are so bad that you notice them at speed (only seen this once, the rotor was actually bent) should only be noticable under braking, ie: nasty vibration/pulsing when pressing the pedal. brakes shouldn't make any difference to the feel of the car based on engine speed as the speed of the brakes is progressive with the speed of the car. engine speed changes througout the the cars speed range because of the trans gearing changing when you shift.

My brakes/rotors were shot and the car vibrated only over 45 mph.

probably had a sticking caliper that was rubbing constantly and warping the rotor, and that's when you finally felt it. still has nothing to do with engine speed.
Edit: at speed it was more likely an unbalanced tire, coulda been caused by bad brakes making the tires wear funny.

My car had a good bit of vibration to it until today. I had to do some work on my trans mount. But yeah, the bolt was sticking half way out when i removed the battery tray for something else. Had to be the culprit and turns out, it was. Now i have a crack in my rear mount by the bolt closest to the trans mount because of this. The car would vibrate under hard acceleration. The shifter would pull with the car too.

It vibrates when parked and revving high also.

Turns out the rear motor mount bracket needed to be welded.

good to know what it finally was
