Well basically what I'm asking is if there is any other (smaller) starters that are compatible with these cars. What the current problem is , is that the custom exhaust manifold piping sits too close to the starter, which is getting fried, along with the power cable.

So I was wondering if there is any other OEM or aftermarket starters that are smaller and would create more clearance.

that is a good question. I've looked into it myself, as the position restricts some of the turbo manifold designs I was contemplating. I haven't found anything as of yet. Plan B was to find a way to have gears setup so that the starter could face the opposite direction (end towards the drivers side.)

I too would like to know the answer to this question. I don't foresee any easily obtained solutions, but you never know... I think I'll stick with DEI starter wrap until something else becomes available.

I was just going to suggest making a sheet metal shield that would reflect some of the heat away from the starter.

Starter wrap sounds like a better idea.

Sarter wrap is good, but I think the heat shield might be easier :shrug
wasn't there a thread where someone posted a link to a supra thread where a guy cut up a stainless steel cooking pot and made a turbo heatshield out of it? maybe modifying the approach that guy took might be a good cheap alternative

A heat shield and wrap would be a good idea. Problem is, I don't think I can even stick my finger in betweent the starter and exhaust.
