From what i gather a neon tranny would be more for the 1/4 mile. Is this correct? is there anything else?

I would say the neon tranny would help out for 1/8th mile too. My experiencs with going to the 3.55 trans was feeling like I acctually had a first gear again. Sure the final drive helps out on the highway and in top speed but all the gears are taller, so even in the 1/8th if you have the power to push it it will be a good mod.

You basically want shorter gearing for 1/8th mile, so the 3.55 isn't what you want, unless you're making big power.
A lot of drag strip cars only run a power glide (2-speed), but have tons of torque to put down.
Since these cars are already kind of gear for high speed, staying with the stock final drive gearing is better for quick acceleration when compared to the neon gearing.
It's the same concept in the rwd world. Mustangs typically come with 3.25 final drive gears, but people swap them out to 3.73 for daily driving, and 4.10+ for the strip (I have 4.56's in the cougar).

Wow, this is very, very good info and thread since I live 5mins from a 1/8th track and most are big block hot rods with the powergilde setup.: thumbsup
