After many of researching with no answers...
after searching on 2gnt and the net, i've come to the point where I would like help.

I asked this question in the chat room here, but didn't have much time to talk to dino or DR or anyone else about it.

Question: I'd like to hook up the radiator fans to a "turbo timer" type of device which will keep the radiator fans running for a user-specified time interval after the car is shut off.

I'd like to do this for the tremendous heat that is under my carbon hood, and cracking the resin on it. The biggest reason is it'll make everything under the hood last a little longer than it will with all that heat after it sits in the sun during the afternoon.

I know i'll get questions like, "why do u wanna do that dude", i don't want an argument, just to try and solve this mystery.

anyone with electrical experiences may be able to solve this. Please feel free to respond. Any helping advice will be loved :)

you might be able to use something like^^^^^^^^. the ecu runs the fans by grounding the coil in the relay. so you could probably wire the timer to keep the relay grounded for a little while after you shut the car off.

Is this the correct diagram to be working with to wire this up?

hopefully it won't be too long, but I am DEFINATELY not electrically inclined.

The problem is that the fan's main power is only on when the car is on, so even if you jumper the relay for some amount of time after the car is shut off, the fans will have no power. You'd have to find a way to short the relay to trigger the fans, as well as supply power to feed them.

It doesnt seem that hard to do. A cheap ebay turbo timer should do the trick.

You can also, do the old ghetto toggle switch mod. Get two 0 gauge wires (Make sure they are same size as the fans) run one to the fans and other to + side of battery. With wires long enough run into cabin hook up a ON/Off toggle switch cheapy at parts store. Make sure when you turn car off turn off fans and when start car turn fans on at same time. I had this done in my old cutlass ciera.

Mikey, we can do this if you have time to stay in one place long enough. All you need is a diesel timer or turbo timer and we could wire it up to the fans. We'll have to rewire the oem relay but we can make it work.

On my husbands car he has this hot wired direct.

It allows you to set the temp that the fans will come on and if you wire it up direct the fans will stay on after the car is turned off, until the temp drops low enough to turn off.

Simple :)

I would make time, but this is more of a want than a need so I'm still tinkering with it, as well as the other couple dozen things on my "fix list". but thanks bro! one day i'll get to it lol

I have seen this type of solution, but after reading up on it, i'd rather not tap into my coolant system with a probe. I'd rather it not be triggered by tempurature.

I kept on researching it and a turbo timer would also work, but that means that as soon as the car turns on, the turbo timer function does as well. I don't wanna turn on the car for just one min in the morning, shut it off and have the turbo timer run my fans for 5 mins just because the car was started. there would be no reason to run the fans in that case. Question though: does a turbo timer have a setting to countdown how long the car has been on, then triggering the turbo timer "active" if that preset time is reached? if so, then that may work... I'm unfamiliar with all turbo timer features and functionality that may be of use for something like this. I have no experience with them.

This would work by counting UP how long the engine is on. If over 15 mins (or whatever preset time), then it activates. Once the car is turned off, the timer starts counting DOWN supplying power to the fans for 5 mins (or whatever preset time). Then the fans shut off after that. I think this is the route I'd like to go. If a turbo timer has this dual-timer functionality, then it'd work.

I dont want a manual toggle switch in the car. I want this all automated.

A temperature controlled solution such as this would work best. You don't have to put the probe in the coolant hose. It's meant to go in the radiator fins. I just bought this: http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS-Performance-Products/555/52125/10002/-1?parentProductId=943351

It was cheaper once shipping costs were factored in.

My husbands are in the fins as well. You can even flush mount it against the fins if you like. Cheap and effective.
