11757, Underdrive Pulley's...Which one should I get?
Posted by Lord_Khan, Jan-10-02 01:46 AM
I'm at 61K miles, and need to replace my timing belt. Since I'm going to be breaking it down, I might as well replace the underdrive pulley. My question is, is there a difference between getting the AFX, or the Unorthodox pulley's? If there isn't, can someone supply me a link to the AFX pulley for $159. Also, will the lightened pulley cause stress on the crankshaft? I've read in a few places that the stock pulley is heavy for a reason?

On some cars changing the pulley can mess up the engine but not on ours. The afx is available at www.howellautomotive.com for $160

Yeah, the article I was reading was about the Saturn crankshaft, and the consequences of changing the pulley. But I noticed on here that it's the way to go for a good hp gain. How much hp does it add on average?

Usually 8 - 10 HP to the wheels all across the rpm range

I have the Unorthodox Racing one (street version) and I really like it, but I don't think that it is worth the extra $80 - $100 (depending on where you get it) over the AF/X one. One really nice thing about it is; the pulley is actually two pieces, a hub (that is mounted to the crankshaft) and the actually pulley (which is mounted to the hub). So, later you can purchase the race pulley (which only turns the alternator, but is lighter and is a 40% underdrive) and remove the street pulley from the hub and bolt the race pulley up and never have to mess with the crankshaft.
