I put some cheep-o fog lights on my car b/c I do a lot of nightttime driving. I got everything wired up and working, but when I went to move the car out of the garage it wouldn't start. it has power and everything in the first key position, but once it is moved to the ignition position, all the int. lights dim and the radio shuts off. After this, it emits 6-7 fast clicking noises and a 2-3 second hum. At this point the lights and radio begin working, but when I try turn the key forward to crank it, it dies. Any suggestions as to the cause? TIA

Those sound like the starter relay and the fuel pump priming. I would check the grounds, and make sure your battery is charged.

How can I check the grounds? All the fuses are fine, and the battery is charged. It is slightly corroded on the positive (bevel? connector?) side of the batery. Should I get a new one? Sorry Im new to the electrical side of stuff.

Most likely bad connection at the battery, but here's some in-depth checking...

Put a volt meter on the starter & block as someone tries to start it. Really shouldn't drop below 10 volts. If it does, do the same at the battery posts. If you get the same there, charge/replace battery. If it stays above 10, or much higher than when you tested it at the starter, tighten/clean cable connections or replace em' if that doesn't do it. You could just ohm them out too, if you know how that goes. If volts don't severely drop either place and it still just clicks, you most likely have a bad starter. I doubt that, but that's where to look next...

I had the same problem and just solved it
The connector on the front of my starter (blue, one wire going in) was corroded. I'm connecting the wire directly to the nut/bolt now and everything is fixed.

two year old post... not bad. At least it's new, relevant information.
