It's amazing how oil discussions always seem to turn ugly in a hurry. Before that happens, I'd just like to point out that the Synlube ad is just that, an advertisement. Before you swear off Mobil 1, just keep in mind that every synthetic manufacturer out there claims their product is the best and goes out of their way to discredit their competitors. Check the sites for Amsoil, Redline, Royal Purple, etc. In the end, any of these oils will do an excellent job of protecting your engine. However, when you start considering extended change intervals, the safest way to determine what works best for you is through oil analysis. Not cheap, and a bit of a hassle, so either generate the data for yourself, or just stick to a reasonable oil change frequency. Twice a year works fine for me with a good quality synthetic and a top quality filter, but that's just me. At an average of 15,000 miles per year max, that means a change every 7,500 miles max. Not unreasonable with synthetics and actually close to what manufacturers recommend for normal driving conditions. If you want to exceed that, have the analysis done frequently to know for sure what you are doing to your engine. Good luck and remember, your mileage WILL vary.

Actually if you analyze history, the 3000 mi oil changed was cooked up by the large oil companies. The manufacturer always recommended at 7500 and sooner under unfavorable driving conditions like out west where its 100 degrees all the time ect.

Bingo. Has always been my belief. BUT I hate to go against that because people, being what they are, often push the envelope. If you say 3000 they push to 5000 (which I consider a safe number), So if you say 7500 they start pushing to 10,000. Gotta allow for human nature.

Very interesting post at neons.org. 10w30 mobil 1 high mileage is an option for our trannies - that is the first time I've heard of this.

As far as the rest of the oil discussion goes, if you understand the role marketing plays in the world, you will always make better decisions as a consumer. I pay $7-8 for 5quarts of supertech high mileage oil, and less than $2 for a supertech filter. This is the most inexpensive combo I've found. Car now has ~120,000 miles on it and zero problems with the engine or sludge

I'm still going to use mobil 1. I'm just saying if their going to say there 100% synthetic, then they should be 100% synthetic. I understand they have to use additives, and they should, but they should disclose the fact that there not syntheticlly manufactured.

And going 7500 miles on an oil change is not good unless you let your car warm up. I used to work for a toyota dealership and we would get alot of sludge engines. People would get there cars serviced with some synthetic oil and think they can go for 7500 on an oil change (not letting the car warm up) and think everything would be alright.

I'm not sure Toyota experience is the best yardstick to apply to oil change intervals. Wasn't there a problem with certain 2.2L and 3.0L Toyota engines and sludge that was determined to be a design problem (no matter what oil was used)? Just type "toyota engine sludge" into your favorite search engine and be prepared to do a lot of reading. Apparently, even folks that could prove they changed their oil according to mfg schedule had engine failures. Toyota and Lexus owners manuals stipulated oil changes at 7,500 miles or 6 months under normal driving conditions, yet Toyota sent letters to at least 3.3 million owners offering to pay for repairs due to sludge and engine failure, even if owners followed the schedule. If you don't want to exceed 3K that's fine, but please don't suggest that those of us who exceed 3K intervals are fooling ourselves that everything is alright and will soon be surprised to see our engines trashed due to sludge build up. By the way, I'm talking about engines in general here, not just 2GNT engines (and certainly not those aforementioned 2.2L and 3.0L Toyota engines).
