excuse if this is not in the correct conference.

I have a question to you guys/gals about those motor oils that are designed for higher mileage cars. i have a 1991 VW passat and it has 145,000 miles on it. should i use one of these higher mileage oils or just stick with the synthetic (mobol 1 tri-sythentic)? and if you agree with the higher mileage oil then which one? valvoline? quaker state, or castrol?

Well if you started off with putting Synthetics, then I stay with them. Just don't go from regular oil to synthetic when you have high milage, shit is gonna leak. At least that's what happened to my friend, he switched when he had about 90K and stuff started to leak. I believe that high mileage also call for heavier oils. Good Luck!!!!!

I would say stick with what you are using. By switching to a synthetic, you can loosen up any buildup on different oil seals, and they can start to leak, at least that is what i have been told my many people. I switched to Mobil 1 from regualr oil at about 55000 miles, and its been perfectly fine so far. I wouldn't waste your money, just stick with what you are using..

Mobil 1 synthetic says it's compatible with conventional oils. I think they even have a high milage version out now.

Stay with the high mileage oil. The synthetic oils have smaller parts and if your seals are bad it well leak. A frind of mine has a 96 twin turbo supra and he trid it and the car would smoke on start up. put regular oil in it and quit smokeing.So I belive if the car didn't come from the factor with synthetic in it don't use it. Unless you like to spend money. By the way cool rims.

Well with that many miles mobile one as much as I love it isnt that thick. All the tolerances in your engine have widened out and now they need thicker oil more than they ever did before. Putting a thin mobile on in at that milage you will notice it leake much more.. If you have no leaks at all and your running perfect then run mobile one with lucas oil stabilizer. It will give it a little more consistancy but you will still have the great lube quality of Mobile 1. If you ever rebuild the engine use mobile one from that day forward. you will actually notice about a 3-5 mpg increase on gas milage :P
