I have a 1999 Eclipse RS, and am experiencing rough idle where the car would idle at about 900 rpms, drop to about 800 and sort of "shake" the car.

When this happens, I can also hear a popping sound from the muffler, kind of sound as if you were blowing through a pipe, and hit the other end with your hand causing it to stop for a second.

Also, acceleration is a bit rough until it goes past 3k rpm.

This roughness started happening last year when a shop replaced my clutch. I called them to see if it could be the clutch, and they said it will take some time for it to break in.

Every time I'm sitting at a light, clutch in or not, gear in or not, it will idle rough.

I replaced my spark plugs today with NGKs BKR5E, gapped to 0.050''.

What could be the problem?

BTW I also have no CEL or any other problems, passed my emission test 3 weeks ago.

check your fuel filter and maybe run some injector cleaner. That's at least where I'd start... Your plug specs are a little odd... a hotter plug with such a wide gap?

There was no difference between replacing the plugs except now that car starts better.

I'm sure the problem lies somewhere else, however what should my gap be then, since it's a range hotter plug? 0.040?

Or are they all even worth it or should I look for something else?

I never go to advanced for car parts anymore. They dont carry shit and most of the clerks suck at life.


NGK plugs are what i'll probably use the life of my car.

As far as wires, accel, denso (what i'm using), msd, nology, crane, blue max.....are all good. For now, i guess you can pay $20-30 for whatever you can find....

Ok, today I was able to do a test to see how and when this rough running happens. I still didn't do any of the things yet because of my schedule and school.

When I push on the gas pedal 1/3 way down, if the car is below 3k RPM it will shake back and forth until it gets to 3k RPM from where smooth acceleration begins.
This goes on for pushing the pedal any further.

It doesn't happen (or at least not noticeably) when I'm only stepping on the gas lightly.

This goes for any gear I'm in.

If it was bad spark plug wires, wouldn't the shaking be consistent rather than through specific RPM range?

My question is, what can cause this specific behavior of shaking below 3 k RPM with WOT?

No. It is not apparent in the higher RPMs.

I am about 90 percent sure you are getting some mis fires and are probably running a little rich. You could have an o2 going out. You can replace the o2 but the new o2 has to be calibrated or it will do the same shit agian in a day or two. I am betting its blackening your plugs.

Hey Im experiencing the same sort of thing. Does it feel like the exhaust is sucking inward just little bit? Put your hand over the exhaust tip and feel for a slight suck (sounds kinda gay but DO IT). Mine was and still is. Im going to pull the head eventually and clean the valves. Thats probably what you have to do, your exhaust valves arent seating properly (gunked up) and causing a rough idle.

I tried everything, new plugs, wires, seafoam, Lucas injector cleaner, the only thing Im going to replace tonight is the fuel filter, but I doubt thats going to help.

What are you retarded or something? Im just simply stating to place your hand over the muffler tip and feel for any sucking. Do I have to spell it out for you? I did this and thats how I found out that I had gunked up sticky exhaust valves. Please dont judge unless you know what your talking about please.

I wasnt giving him any BS answer to his question. I was just stating that it could be a sticky valve, and thats one way to check it. Yes I just started with this 2gn, but Ive owned 2 1gns, one turbo and one N/A. So technically Im not a newb, at least to the 4G63T.
