Hey guys, is it bad on an engine to backfire? Like when you shift hard without a cat and it backfires? Or when I hold in my 2 stage rev limiter and floor it and it lays one fire after another in rapid secession out the greddy muffler... Is that damaging to the engine or just the exhaust? I always throw flames at night time after I get done whoopin' on whatever pulls up, but never have known whether it is harmful to my exhaust valves or anything?

With a rev limiter, this is normal. I think the only thing that could be damaged by it would be the cat, but since you don't have one..

turbo cars run rich usually. Without a cat, un burned fuel will get back there. Completely normal to my short amount of knowledge.

nah. you are probably just running SUPER rich. I remember MuRiX's car woudl get a bit of aterburn between shifts as well (no beckfire becasue of the cat 'though). my car doesn't do that fo rsome reason. the only time my car shot fire when using the two sage rev limiter was when my intake cam was off a tooth (car was uncanny laggy). if it is making the right ammount of power, it is probably fine 'though.

Mine does it and I am all motor with no cat. Usuallly at the 7200 rpm shifts.

Most aftermarket ignition systems have a 2 stage rev limit in it. The first rev limit is set for normal driving. The 2nd for launching at the track. I would launch with mine at 4500rpm at the track. The ignition system drops the spark to 1 cylinder at a time to hold the engine at that set rpm. The fuel still goes to the cylinder but no spark so the fuel goes out the exhaust and sometimes it can be lit in the tail pipe and cause backfiring.

Well, good to hear it's not damaging, cause I love blowing flames at people. Do you think with proper dyno tuning, I will get rid of the backfiring after hard shifts? I just like to put in the clutch, and hit the rev limiter, I can do without the flames between gears.

BTW, 3'' downpipe and 2.5'' IC piping being done Tuesday. I can't wait to see if she spools faster.

Do you even have an o2 sensor after all the crap was put in the car? If so, that would be worn much faster due to the flames.

his car doesn't need an o2 sensor. tuning it should help eliminate some of that if you have calmap.

the only thing i use an 02 sensor for is to get an air/fuel reading to make sure i'm rich enough and that it doesnt run lean under boost, which shouldnt be a prob with the fuel setup it has, but you cant be too safe...
