ever since the last time I had my engine out the last time the alternator belt shreds at about 1000 miles. What could be out of alignment to make them shred and how do I check the pulleys to make sure they are aligned?

Check the three bolts on the alternator pulley bracket. You need a 15mm wrench to make sure they are evenly torqued. As long as the car is cool to work on, it shouldn't take long. Figure about 2 hours taking your time because I don't remember if you need to remove the alternator belt to get to the bracket bolts.
