So I went to install my new head and all associated parts in doing so. When my progress screached to a hault as I cam to see the true culprit of my original heads demise. Anyone else ever see anything like this before?

That happened to someone on the board a long time ago. Same result - bent valves

Was there any sort of root cause? Or did it randomly break for no reason? I just want to know if I need to dig further and replace anything else now that I have it torn down so far.

Nifty. Tensioner failure.

I had an idler pulley fail in almost the same way, although the bolt didn't break and the car didn't lose time.

Yeah I had seen your post about the pully failing on you, as I said I just haven't hear or read about my issue and I would like to find an idea as to why. Now, since I haven't torn off all the timing cover crap yet, I just fished out the tensioner so I could see what happened.

Now since I couldn't get a really good view of what is going on down there. Does this bolt directly into the block or does it bolt to the tensioner bracket?

Part of the tensioner bracket, threads into the block.

ok, thanks. I was looking for that picture actually. I had come across it during my searches a while back, but now that I needed it for refrence I couldn't for the life of me find it.

I just got back from the dealership and they ordered the wrong damn bolt, so now I am back to the waiting game. I just wish I knew why it had broken in the first place. I have seen a few posts about the bracket breaking and I am wondering if this is a sign that the tensioner bracket may be on it's way out as well.

It might be a good idea while you're in there to just replace the entire timing assembly, if you have the extra cash. Preventative maintenance imo.

Well the car is currently dead in someones garage 5 hours away. I was just trying to get home.

Update: I went to get the bolt, they ordered the wrong one and they just called me back saying I have to buy the entire bracket assembly about $100 or so for it. I have all the parts already I just need the damn bolt! anyone have a pivot bolt that they want to send me?

+1 for the mechanical tensioner. -1 for the hydrolic, IMO. That really sucks man, probably have a pivot bolt, I will check when I get home tonight.

Well update... I got the car back together and drove it for a while, then sold it and got a jeep cherokee( I needed a bigger vehicle )

yes, you are right. I do miss it!!! BUt I am enjoying having something that I can haul a bit of stuff in.

I traded my Cherokee for a WRX wagon. almost the same interior space, 5-6 mpg better than the jeep, and much more enjoyable when you push the long pedal.

still doesn't handle like the 2G though, it feels like the heavy beast it is going around the twisties.
