I did a new wire/plugs and oil change yesterday everything went well. Except my car didn't turn over went back under checked my terminals found out that my Negative wire was abit lose and the wire is in bad shape, my step dad was walking by he told me that groundwire needs to be replaced and thats why my battery wasn't getting any connection.

Question which type/size and Length of gauge wire to replace the negative terminal wire. This is from the starter to the Negative side of the Battery.

I'm going to Walmart or Advance after my job interview this morning and gonna replace this wire today. Can I use the 4 gauge Scosche brand they have for amps or should I go to Adavance auto use what they have.

I'd go with whatever they've got that's the same gauge or bigger than what is already there.

I've never had to replace the wire itself, but I've put new terminals on more than once over the years.

I replace the terminals/batttery cleaned the ends had alot of corrosion been a few yrs since then now it crap out. Should've replaced then but been busy working, moving funerals.

I had to reschedule my interview for thrusday my car wouldn't crank its still the negaive groundwire.

Gonna take this wire to advance measure borrowed my moms ride before her appointments.

Would this wire be about five feet just looking under the hood.

The negative line to the starter? :wary I had to replace the positive line to the battery once, but not a negative. It's been a couple months since I've been under the hood, but I want to say the negative terminal goes directly to the chassis, not the starter.

ok but you mean the strut tower.

The negative grounds to the strut tower and then again on the transmission I'm pretty sure. I'm trying to picture it because I just replaced the + and - wires. It takes like 5 minutes to change out both wires. The wire length is much shorter than 5 ft. I think its somewhere around 40".

its 49 inches for both + and - I just changed my - wire with a new 4 gauge bigger than the factory 2 gauge - wire black w/ yellow strip.

Connections looks much cleaner oh its one wire for the - terminal goes from the atx ground clip to the strut tower chrimp about foot from the - terminal end and use a ground clip bolt this to the strut tower which should be pre drilled from SATAN.

Took me abit longer than 5min due to bending the thick 4g wire around the battery.

Wierd my ground bolts to the firewall and then the tranny. O well still works and no cel.:thumbsup

I remember when I rewired the battery, starter and alternator. swapped the corroded to shit factory stuff for some Monster audio quality 4G wire. Holy shit the starter turned the engine over quick, my lights seemed brighter inside and out, and I could crank the stereo 3-4 notches higher before geting distortion.

For your information 4 AWG is smaller that 2 AWG not bigger

Wire gauges go backwards down to 0 (and then past 0 with other numbers like 2/0, 4/0 then into MCM's (or kcmil = 1000 circular mils).

I work with 750kcmil at work which is about 2" in diamter easily..real fun to make tight bends (and a tight bend for 750MCM is like bending around a 12" diamter if your lucky)

750MCM requires aluminum a radius of 12" or greater not diameter to go around a corner especially when it will be placed in coduit and pulled in / pulled out.

Lets stick with automotive grade wire here huh? I can more than dazzle you with industrial grade conductors. 1/0 is the largest you will find and usually only in aftermarket situations.

1/0 is huge. running that shit through a car is maddening.
