115156, MY 420a is Making Sound Belt Making Noise Need Help Posted by 420aRS, Jan-20-08 04:17 PM
Hi I am new to the forum and love my 99 n/t rs. I have a problem with my 99 eclipse rs. This sound has been going on since November and it happens every now and then. The sound happens when it rains and when I go fast as well I hear the chirping sound by that big gear I have taken a picture bellow. The sound usually happens when it is cold a chirping sound that sounds like a fake supercharger and I have narrowed the spot by that big belt with the big gear I took pictures to show you guys. Can someone please help me? What would I have to change then is it serious? Please help me thanks guys.

First off all, its a pulley, not a gear. Secondly that is the pulley for your powersteering pump. Check the tension of the belt by pushing down on it..it shouldn't go down more that 1/4". If that is good check the alignment of the pulley for straightness with the crankshaft pulley by taking a straight edge and putting it on the crankshaft pully and powersteering pump pully and look for gaps. If any are found, you have to shim the pulley or find yourself a new power steering pump mounting bracket.

Or it could just be the belt, it looks a little old in the pics. How long since you have replaced it? It could also be a clutch on the AC. Take the belt off and spin the ac and the ps by hand. If it doesn't feel smooth then you replace the one that feels "crunchy" when you spin it. If they both feel smooth then get a new belt.

I think it may be a combination of both posts above. I can't tell, but it looks like in the 2nd pic that your tensioner surface may have some crud on the inner edge. When that happened to me it was because of an improperly aligned crank pulley. It was causing my belts to ride the outer edge of the pulley, and eventually my tensioner bearing crapped out. If I were you, I would try to remove the tensioner roller, and clean that off maybe with some fine grit sandpaper. It wouldn't hurt to replace the bearing while you're at it. Like was said above, check the alignment of your crank pulley, check the belt, and check for the condition of the ac and ps pulleys.

Which one is the ac pulley? I did push down and it doesnt go over 1/4 where there is no support. I never changed that belt since I got the car at 64,900 miles. It is now at 67k. When I turned my car on I saw the pulley is a little off it is more to the right then the left should it be dead on in the middle? The noise didint appear today it happens when its cold or when there is rain. Also I now have another problem. The coolant is now leaking could it be because of this? I have pictures below can someone help me out with this problem as well? It is leaking right below the black thing going into the radiator can this be the reason as well why my fan is always going on by my radiator? The wet surface is where the leak is dripping from. Someone please help.

You've got alot of crud on your thermostat housing.
That upper hose could be cracked and leaking. Your radiator could have a hole in it. It's hard to tell from the pics....
Try replacing your thermostat with a higher temp one and replace your radiator hoses.

i dont know if this was covered... or would make the same noise? Have you checked the power steering fluid? you could be burning up the pump.

nobody has mentioned so i'll throw it out there it could be the tensioner pully bearing going out. this is an easy thing to get from McMaster and press in (cant remember the part # but a search will find it)
also try getting a hold of (i.e. borrow or rent) a mechanics stethoscope and using that to pinpoint the noise.

I am having this same problem, belt squeal, and the leaking fluid. Did you ever get this problem resolved?

Well I think I fixed my problem for now, I had a coolant leak from one of the hoses. I also changed the thermostat and that seemed to fix my heating problem.

Agreed. My 99 Spyder had a horrendous belt squeal. The p/s bracket was bent. Didn't want to chance trying to tweak it straight. Got a new power steering pulley bracket for <$40 from dealer. Replaced the belt <$9. There are four bolts involved... Can't remember if they were 10mm or 12mm... Made a big difference. Then just down to the little chirp at the top of the shift cycle. Re-tightened after two weeks of driving, and seems good.
