I have been trying to get my car inspected all week and every time I go to the station they hook the computer up to my car and tell me it's not reading. They keep telling me that I need to drive the car around and come back. The first day it happened I jumped on the highway and drove 55 miles and came back without shutting off the car and still no good. I have been driving my car all over and have gone back three times and each time it's still not reading on their computer. I decided this morning to try another shop that does inspections and the same thing happened. Their computer said that it could not read any codes. This is my first time attempting to get my car inspected since adding turbo but I searched and did not read of anyone else having this type of problem. Has anyone else heard of this problem before?

its prolly not communicating which means there could be a bad ground at the obdII plug or even as far as an ecu issue. Its not a drive around fix.

Take it vatozone and ask them to read it generically. if it communicates with a cheapo generic scanner then its got to be a problem with that facility your going to.

My car is a 96. I forgot that my dad has a code reader at his house so I borrowed it and it shows no error codes. Then under the diagnostic option the catalytic converter shows up as N/A and two others also show N/A. I think that this is what the mechanics mean by it not being ready. The information is not showing yet. I just put a new battery in last weekend so it's possible that I just need to drive the car longer. It's just frustrating cause i've put like 200 miles on it since the first time the mechanic told me I needed to drive it more and still today it wasn't showing. Thanks for the suggestions guys. I guess i'll just have to continue driving it and hope the N/A info shows up.

If the inspector is able to query the ECU at all, the emissions monitors they're waiting to see will eventually switch to ready. From what I've read in the Tech Info Manual (link in sig), you need to do at least two key on / key off sequences, each containing a trip of at least 10 miles, reaching operating temperature over a mix of steady high speed and stop-and-go operation.

Good to know for next time. I drove the car for two hours this morning before taking it back to the private inspection place and the three still showed N/A. The guy said that since I had been driving it and bringing it in all week that he would just pass it. I slipped him a few extra $20's and was on my way. No more headaches till 2010. :+
