Im sure some of you saw my pics of my car on the side of the road. I decided to post up my findings after working on the car.

Im putting in a replacement NV-T350 with a new clutch, polishing up the engine bay, changing timing belt/components. Im also installing an Underdrive Pulley, but theres a problem with that...
I ordered it (AF/X UDP) from Howell Automotive.. If any of you have dealt with them before..Im sorry. So whenever that gets here...it will go on.

On to pics...slow start.

After about 10 hours of working on it, I found out what actually happened. My timing belt didnt break, but it does have holes in it. I got the motor out, popped open the t-belt cover, and a bunch of BBs from a ball bearing fell out. Both the idler and tensioner pulleys failed. One got so hot it rainbowed. Thats what the noise coming from my belts was. Should have done something about it.

Ha, the last pic is me standing in the engine bay looking for bolts.

Sucks.

I've had that happen before, not fun but at least you shouldn't need to replace the head.

remember kids, ALWAYS replace your tensioner and idler pulleys when you do the timing belt, and do the timing belt on time.

Yeah Ive had a LOT of naysayers say "Oh yeah man your head is definately trash". I was like well dont jump to that conclusion, the tensioner failed but kept the belt on the pulley, and I didnt hear any mechanical damage, so Im going to keep a positive attitude about it until I pull the head.

While the motor is out Im going to be taking parts off, such as the coolant tubes that go the the heater hoses, the lift eye, probably some suspension parts, and Im going to take them to work and sandblast them. Then I have a buddy who does powder coating and have them coated black.

Anyone have any recommendations of where to get a t-belt or a belt kit? Summit has a goodyear belt for $39, and the pulley kit from autozone is like $60.

Those will work fine. buy a new tensioner from satan to be safe as well

I have not checked prices in a while, but Partsdianasur.com has some good prices for the 2gnt brethren. Check him out. He did not have the goodyear belts before and that's what I run too. but check him for the tensioner and pulleys...

I got a timing set from O'Rielly's when mine went out (Same sort of thing, belt started squaking like a MF, found a ball bearing lodged between my cam gear and timing cover, downed it right then). It's workin fine so far, I did get a different belt, didn't skimp there.

Worked on the car for just a few hours today. I basically got the head ready to be pulled off. The last picture is the crank pulley puller I had to rent from autozone. I told the guy I needed a 3 jaw puller and he was like "Its either for a Chrysler or a Mitsubishi isnt it?" I was like "Umm...both". And he actually knew what I was talking about. More to come probably tomarrow.

Tough break man, but looks like you're well on your way to a speedy recovery (minus the UDP). Good luck finishing her up!

Thanks man. Yeah I really dont want to waste half the summer working on it, so Im trying to haul ass. Today I started pulling the motor/trans out of a 95 Talon ESi. The tranny from that is going in my car. One day at a time I guess...

Hope it all goes back together nice for you man. my timing belt tensioner broke aswell (about two weeks ago), but it was the Bolt that holds the pully. took 9 or 10 valves and possibly my weisco pistons with it. hope yours dosent look to bad when you crack it open. from the lack of rockers laying in the head it should be fine though. i pulled my V.C. off and saw 9 rockers laying there and knew it was trash.

Well at least someone is giving me hope that my head isnt trash. Im thinking if my valves arent too bad I may even port and polish while the head is off.
Anyway, I spent the day at my buddies house pulling the motor/trans out of a Talon he bought to part out. Heres the trans thats going in my car. It was filled with ATF-4 so thats a good sign.

Good news guys, I got the head off the block today, and I was pleasantly surprised. No valve damage at all. In fact, everything looked very clean. Newer pistons are in there too. Whoever worked on this car last also had enough sense to get the Fel-pro MLS head gasket.

I was going to port and polish while the head is off, but I figured I just want to be able to drive it again. My GF has been driving me around for a while now. Would you guys recommend copper spray on the head gasket or just the gasket? Its a Fel-pro MLS

Got the engine bay cleaned up pretty good. Changed the fuel filter. Got the head and block cleaned up ready for a new gasket. The engine is pretty much all together, just took some small parts off to paint. Just waiting on a clutch now.

Did you have that "new" head milled for the MLS HG? If you didn't you really should. Sealing after removal like that is usually a crap shoot. Would hate to see you lose a tbelt and go to all this trouble only to end up with a leaking HG a month later. /nailbiting

And what's with all the stumps in that one picture? You got something against trees, man? I've been told 1st gear in AW71 was a stump puller, but I had no idea!

I didnt have the head milled, but I have faith that it will be ok. It was fine before right? (knocks on every piece of wood in house)

Ha, those stumps are at my buddys house. Its firewood. And my brick had a nasty 1st gear in the AW. Never made enough power for it to fall out of my car and shoot down the block, but damn as soon as the Turbo spooled it would break both rear street slicks loose. So many people turned down a race because of that. :)

Quite a bit to update here. I posted a few times on a local forum, but havent here, so I have an ass-ton of pics to post.

Havent had much work time because of the rain. But I took the synchronizer cover off the old transmission. The one synchro is pretty much about to fail. Theres also springs missing from the internals. You can see one just chillin out. So Im glad Im getting a new one. And the other pics are of the paint. The tranny came out awesome. The motor I decided would look better black, and it does.

Haven't had any parts lately. So there was really no work to do. I just started recieving parts, so this weekend it will start to go back together.

Thats my F1 Racing Stage 1 clutch. I was slightly dissapointed the clutch was spray painted blue, and was SACHS flywheel, pressure plate, and probably disk too. Also, the air filter I got for $11 from ebay, and my before and after sandblasting and primer of header. The liquid stuff is the ceramic header coating Im going to have a buddy do for me.

Well its almost done. Today in a matter of like 7 hours I got it almost all the way back together. I ended up having to stop for the day because it got too dark to work. Right now theres one motor mount bolted down and a jack under the tranny. Theres also pics of the fogs I bought, to which I did the "foglight mod", and the headlights I wetsanded and buffed. The drivers side was bad but looks a lot better.

Oh, it wasnt me. It was the kid I bought the car from. He admitted to me, someone who was going to buy this car, that he raced it. He was telling me how he "powershifted" alot. He would just mash down the gas and slam it into the next gear all the time, no clutch. My 3rd gear would always grind, so it was shot from the time I got it. I should have taken some pics from the inside. The gear that drives the Diff had HUGE chunks taken out of it. I dont know what was keeping it together. Some people need to realize, a stock Eclipse GS is NOT a racecar..

People need to relize that stock 2gnt's are slow.

Faster than most ricer sohc hondas but still slow.

I noticed your allen wrench (is it?) in your tensioner is going through the backside of the tensioner in one of your pics. That's going to piss you off having to take that off, pull the pin out, and do it again. I didn't have a bench vise when i f-ed that up so i lowered the car on it.

it's a cotterpin and if you look a pic or 2 farther down you'll notice that it's been removed. :P

Well my car is back on the road. I was going to post up pics yesterday, but I didnt get around to it because I was in a car accident :071:

But anyway, it drives great now. The new tranny shifts like a dream, thanks in part to the $15 a quart oil I got from the dealer. The clutch grabs good, but the pedal has very little resistance. I thought it would slip it was so loose, but theres no slippage. I guess I expected there to be alot of pedal effort for a stage 1 clutch.

Congrats on getting it back on the road. I hope the accident wasn't in the eclipse

Thank god, the wreck was not in my Eclipse or any DSM. It was in my GFs moms 2006 Buick Rendezvous. The car is probably totalled.
