Hey, i need to do a bit of welding on my exhaust, but before i go at this i want to make sure i dont need to unhook anything other then the battery and the computer. Ive been told that i should disconnect the alt. but am not sure if that is true. thanks. ohh and dont suggest to just take it off the car, i just have a crack on the flange that attaches to the cat, and i want to fix it before anything decids to break.

As far as I know you should be fine with just the battery Unhooked. The electricity cant flow anywhere if it has a break in the circuit.

lol, i've never heard of this. Muffler shops weld all the time w/out disconnecting anything. I've welded lots of times w/out disconnecting anything

There is a chance something can happen though. Ive seen it backfeed thru grounds and do some damage. Either blowing fuses or burning wires. Its not common though.

I have seen the grounds in harnesses before fireballs. Muffler shops are just getting lucks becuase usually they is a poor path to the harness through the motor and rlats gaskets ect. You def want to unhook the battery.

I actually had the harness on my harley start smoking when i was tacking nuts to the frame years ago. Thats when the boy shop (we rented space to) explained the ground path becoming a common path to the battery.

ECU should be fine but its easy to unplug....do it anyway

alright thanks. Last time i welded on my old talon, i forgot to take out the battery, and fried the computer, so i wanted to make sure.
