Hey guys, I am doing some finishing touches to the new motor for the eclipse, and I have run into a problem. I want to install my cam gears, but I cant get my UDP off.

Methods used.

I am using a harmonic balancer puller that I picked up from AZ.

I backed out the crank shaft bold about 1/2" and set the puller onto the pulley and gave a shot. No luck.

Next I stepped up to the breaker bar and still no luck.

Moving forward, I used some Mapp gas and heated it. once heated I tried the breaker bar again. Still no luck.

So I decided to really add the power, I went with the breaker bar with a pipe slipped over the end. No luck other than destroying the puller. So, I tossed in the towel a beaten man.

Any secrets? I will be picking up a new harmonic balancer puller tomorrow, and after work I will have another go at it.

aftermarket UDPs are 2 pieces.
so i hope you removed the outer AL ring and are just trying to pull the center steel piece off. (there is a MpX one out there that is similar to OEM and is a single AL piece though)

anyway, you need to change pullers for this. the one with the "hooks" tht most people use to get off the oem one wont get the aftermarket one off.
you need one that has the ability to use the M6 bolts that attached the AL ring to the center piece. looks like a chicken foot and should have 4 arms on it that are ridged. (same kind that you remove your crank timing sproket with) the kit should have a bunch of long threaded bolts and washers that should fit your udp and then a long center bolt that will rest on the snout bolt.
should come off nice and smooth with that man, and if you have to use a breaker bar your doing somthing wrong.

Thats not true. There are a ton of aftermarket UDP's that are a 1 piece aluminum design. All the ebay knockoffs, and OBX crap are all 1 piece alluminum.

To the OP if you have already bent or damaged the aluminum UDP you currently have then just cut the fucker off. Make sure not to damage the crank snout though.

I doesnt apear to have been damaged, but it is a one piece design. I will go home and reinspect everything. I dont think I am missing anything.

For the record, the AFX UDP is also one piece (a steel collar is permanently pressed into an aluminum body). You remove it with a harmonic balancer puller (as described earlier). You really shouldn't need a torch. It helps to oil the threads on the main puller bolt. If the threads get damaged, the puller will try to twist and bend the other three bolts.

Hmmm, you should have that much of issue.

IIRC, we put a 6" 1/4in extension in after the crank bolt was all the way out. Then used a standard three jaw puller...

I believe that the pully is an AFX. As for the puller, its a cheap autozone one. Im going out on my lunch break to get a new/better one.

Looking at the puller, it looks as if maybe the main threads may have been the point of failure. I am stuck here at work, and this is sheer speculation.

sorry bout that guys i thought that the only one that was solid was the mpx one, and that most of the knockoffs were based on the the UR 2 piece design.

well guys I got it off! I went to AutoZone and got the Chrysler puller and off it came, nice and easy.
