113731, serious altenator/battery/power problems
Posted by stv, Aug-29-03 02:52 PM
ok folks..here's the deal... My car has been sitting for 7 months basically.. I rebuilt the engine myself.. the engine runs very smooth, no problems there.. the problem I have is the battery.. I just bought the battery a week ago, so its a new battery.. I hooked my amp up and drove it all for 3 days w/ no problem... the third day my batt light came on and my check engine light.. I took it to autozone for some testing and they said they thought it was an altenator b/c of how many volts my battery was puttig out..So i bought a new altenator ($238) and installed it... drove it and same thing happens.. the batt light comes on (oh yeah my check engine light went off after one day)... So its not the altenator, not the battery (unless I bought a brand new bad battery???)..what else could it be.. I heard if some grounds arent grounded correctly it could mess it up.. I did paint my block, but I cant really find any grounds connected to my painted block, only ground I have is from the firewall to the throttle body, so its not touching any painted surface... please help or give some recommendations... anything else should be grounded that I need to check? and what are those 2 wires that are connected to my battery terminal, they are stock wires I can tell, and they both are connected to the positive terminal I think..atleast they are now :) Any help/suggestions would help..and please someone read my post about my suspension... its startin to freak me out.. I have a 95GS..peace

oh yeah and to add to this... I did pull my positive terminal w/ my old altenator and the car died.. I havent done it w/ the new altenator, b/c someone said it was bad for the electrical stuff.. and trust me I've searched different posts until my eyes are crossed and my head hurts.. thanks guys

dang, 250 for an alternator??? I can build you one for like 50 bucks.
Well check your battery terminals and amke sure they are connected good and then follow your ground wire and see that it is connected to a good ground. Also, on some charging systems a dead battery can throw it off. Unless autozone took the alternator off and checked it by it's self they cant tell if it is bad or not. And batteries come bad off of the shelfs some times, they can seperate and not get a connection on the inside. Take it to a local mechanic shop and get it tested (not autozone) They should be able to do it and be pretty accurate about it.

Make sure the battery is cahrged up good. cause if it is a bad alternator it will kill the battery pretty fast.

ok even if ur battery reads 12.6 like it is surposed to it could still be bad u could have a bad cell inseide not producing many volts and having other cells produce more making u think it is ok u need to get a load test done on it.
Also did u check to make sure they gave u the right alternator they might have given u one that was to small for ur car and does not produce enough power. If i was u i would take it mechanic and have them hook it up to a VAT they will beable to do a load test on ur car and tell u if ur alternator is producing enough power for ur needs. It may do fine during the day but at night when u have alot of stuff on and the system bumping the alternator might not beable to keep up and is relying on ur batter for the rest of the power instead of charging it. ALso check all ur wires for corosion. And if ur able check the resistance is in lines.

stage 4 clutch, aluminum flywheel, solid motor mounts, Phantom grip, phantom boost, egt, a/f, oil psi, apexi TT, Jeep TB, Star stage 2 with custom 3 inch downpipe out passenger side bumper, custom ground kit, flacon azenis, 2 inch drop, eibach camber kit, crank scrapper, and some other stuff

personally what i think happened is that you grounded the positive for the alternator and baked the fusible link for the alternator choke. 13 bucks from a mitsu dealer. it's in the fuse box by the driver side head light. it says on the bottom left of the fuse box 'alternator choke' check to see if its blown then lemme know i have some other possible solutions

no probs man thats what i do, fix dsm's...lol. there are two screws (8mm i believe and 10mm) unscrew those, disconnect the connection pull out the funky lookin fuse swap in the new one (i suggest bringin the fuse into mitsu and matchin it up with the one they give u, nothing worse than havin the wrong part imo) put it all back together and check your alternator to make sure someone didnt hook up a ground wire to the positive on the alternator (very likely, u cant tell the difference, check a manual or something, if not i can describe to you what the pos looks like) lemme know if that helps....

thanks man..helps alot.. I installed the altenator.. and I'm almost positive there is only one wire to actually be connected to the altenator..besides the sensor hookup... but I also may be wrong (it's happened before :)) but thanks for the help so far.. I'm goin to satan tomorrow to try and get one if I have time before work, the nearest satan is 60 miles away :( fuckers moved!!!.........so basically there are only 2 total things goin to my altenator.. the plug in(sensor) and the wire that the 2 nuts hold on...I'm guessin it's the positive... there is no ground that I can find to go anywhere.. I'm gonna check everything carefully tomorrow, is it possible it just blew the fuse b/c it was all sittin for 7 months? or do you think my original alt was bad and threw it? thanks again man..sorry for so many q's...holla

the positive terminal on the alt is the most obvious one looking from the bottom. it connects to the wiring harness. the connection is kinda hidden under this plastic thing, it takes a deep socket to get the pos off, but dont mess with that im just describin what it looks like. the ground is on the backside of the alt, it's pretty obvious its a ground wire once u see it. black with a little yellow stripe goin to the firewall. hope that helps.

Unhook the battery or you risk blowing the voltage regulator if you touch the alternator with the hot wire.

yeah I know.. I did that.. I always disco the battery even if its just an oil change.. I'm tryin to trace what friggin wire it is causing the 120amp fuse to blow.. turbo8u... you talkin bout a ground wire.. I dont think there is a ground wire on the alt.. just the positive wire that gets nut-tightened (haha) to that post and the sensor hookup, which I'm assuming has a ground in it.. but a actual ground from block to altenator wire I dont think there is one.. unless there is suppose to be and then I guess I found my problem.. thanks guys.. keep 'em comin

ok well I'm guessin there isnt an actual ground (black and yellow)wire that mounts to the altenator.. so I took my wiring harness out yes long job, but had to do it.. I was determined to find the damn problem.. b/c I want/need my roxanne back, its been 7 months since she's been 100%... after goin through about 60% of the wires and seperating them in singles and or in a bunch going to a certain sensor/sensorplug and taping everything off and cleaning well w/ a wire brush and a tooth brush for small amounts of corrosion.. I think I fixed my problem.. somehow, I know nothin bout electronics of a car, but I think I did a pretty good job.. took me over 4 hours of straight work.. no breaks either, but I did it like I want it and it looks pretty cool too.. I drove my car probably 30 miles and no battery light came on!!!! yayy.. STV did it right I hope this time.. I hooked my amp and speakers back up and still no probs.. knock on wood.. thanks guys for all your help.. oh and if there is an actual ground wire that posts to the altenator, please let me know, cuz I need to find it or put one on.. thanks fellas.. I'm gettin it all checked by autozone tomorrow for what amps I'm putting out and I'll post it.. holla

just get a turbo timer and u can watch ur volts all the time, good for ur car kinda i guess too. and hey, if u go turbo...its a plus too. and yes, if it has a power it MUST have a ground, thats basic electronics. if it is not a solid connection you will blow that fusible link EVERY time, and eventually fuck up your alternator, fuck up the fuel pump, ecu, etc etc..

i put out 14.3 when my car is on (+ or -) and then drops down to about 13.5 when my car warms up. let me know if i can help u anymore

"I'm guessin there isnt an actual ground (black and yellow)wire that mounts to the altenator"

ther isnt, or at least in any of the eclipses ive ever seen. the alt. grounds through its mounting points in the bracket. ;)
