No this isn't another post about can it be done ... it has. Unfortunately not to my car but a member of this board has done the swap successfully ... Trisha. I rode in her car today and it's much faster than the last time I was in it. I will take some pictures of it next time I'm there. It's really sweet. My car is next. }>

PS. See Michael ... I told you I'd do it. :P

How much did the swap end up costing??/

I heard it wasnt worth it??

Thanks!!

Hahahah it isnt worth it WHAT?!!

What other $500-2000 mod knocks 2-3 seconds off your quarter and doesnt harm your engine one bit?

Do you have a list of parts that need to be swapped/installed? Pictures would be great, too. I'm doing a AT-MT swap in two months. How much did it cost? Did she get the parts at a junk yard or buy a junked eclipse? How long did it take to complete? I'm doing the labor myself. Also, does the tach work correctly? I really need some detailed info on this.

2-3 seconds?
sorry, but i think not

I heard it's about 1500 to do the swap, and it will knock off at MOST 1.5 seconds from your quarter mile time. Typically one second difference. But if you're tranny isn't dead, I have a better swap in mind - sell the nt and get a gs-t manual for 1000 bucks more. You get an extra 70 hp plus a manual tranny and a turbo. I'm not trying to be cynical but just adding a sense of reality for the most cost effective moves. But if you really wanna keep the 420a, go for the swap. Just not cost effective in my opinion unless your AT is already dying and needs to be replaced anyways.

I'm not going to say how much they would charge ... they can answer that. I know that they bought all the parts they needed for about $750. I can also say that I'm getting mine done and it will probably be less than $1k (by a pretty decent amount) but I have some of the parts necessary already. As for trading it in and getting a gs-t ... come on. Not to be mean but that's as helpful as people saying sell your NT and get a turbo or something like that. We all have our cars for different reasons. I completely own mine (the title is ONLY in my name) and that holds a lot personal meaning to me. So I'm never getting rid of this damn thing. Even if I end up dumping the same amount (I'm 1/3 or the way there) I bought the car for I will always have it. I definitely think this is a very cost effective mod. Other than turbo'ing or NOSing your car nothing will not give you a ~1 sec increase in time. Plus it's so much more fun to drive (especially if you're in to road racing vs drag racing all the time).

I will attempt to get a parts list from the shop (ARD - advanced racing dynamics) that they needed for the swap. Yes the tach was working. I will take pictures in progress when they do mine and I will take some pictures of Trisha's finished product.

Oh ya, don't you also need a manual tranny ECU, or are they the same? I didn't mean to sound rude or anything, I was just being practical. If you want to keep your car and do the conversion, then go for it. But I'm saying to the average person who has an auto and wants it fast, it might not be very cost effective to do a swap if your auto tranny is still fine. Assuming it costs 1000 for the auto tranny swap parts and labor, the way I see it is this: Either I do the auto tranny swap, or sell the gs and get a gs-t (which comes with leather seats, 70 extra hp, 4g63 with turbo). To me, if both cost the same, without a doubt I would get the gs-t. Personally, I put too much money in this car right now to sell it, so if my bro wants this car and I can find a gs-t for cheap, then I'm going to go for it.

BTW, insurance for a gs-t is not that much more since a 97 gs-t is old now. I found out that it would cost me 400 extra for every 6 months, to add a 97 gs-t under my own name, and also have the gs. I'm only 21 too. That's only 70 bucks extra to insure two eclipses, one turbo, one nonturbo.

When my MT went out I paid $750 a used tranny and $250 for the labor at a tranny shop to pull the tranny change the clutch to my CM Stage 3 and put in the newer tranny. It wouldn't be that much more to have them install the linkage and clutch pedal, or do that yourself first. No offense to anyone but I hate automatics. My first 2 cars were auto and after driving other 5 speeds and owning mine I would have it no other way. You are in COMPLETE control of how fast the car goes which REALLY helps when taking corners fast. Waiting on the ECU to shift the car SUCKS. Go for it IMO!!!

I got the tranny from Langston's Auto Salvage. They shipped it from SC or GA area. The shop that did it was Jeff's Transmissions. I dropped the car off with the brand new clutch and the used tranny at 8 am and was driving home at 4 pm.

About the ECU ... you don't actually need a manual ECU. Currently Trisha's car is running with the old AT ecu. It doesn't seem to have any problems except that the rev limiter is lower (though I'm not sure because it could just be that the tach could be off (kinda like having AT gauge face in a MT). I'm not sure. It'll probably be easier to figure out in my car with the AFC displaying the RPMs.

It's pretty cost effective for me ... I'd expect my tranny to last another couple of months before it blows up. I know you were just being practical and not trying to be rude. This is really just a good opportunity to do this plus I've done so many little things to my car to make it unique that I don't really want to get rid of it to start over on something else. It's kinda like leaving something half done and giving up to me. Plus I really don't have an option. Though I like going really damn fast in a straight line I'm much more passionate about road racing so I defnitely needed to get the swap done.

If you sell a NT for a turbo, you are going to lose a lot more than a $1k. Total cost of mods should be no more then around $750, do the labor yourself, and sell the ATX to make up some of the cost. It is pretty cheap all said and done and still one of the best performance mods an auto car can make in my opinion.

if I wanted to, I could build my AT all to hell. My dad owns an auto transmission specialty shop. We might do some clutch installs or some kinda odd str8 gear work. Nothing major tho. I can get the level 10 rebuild in the car for about 200 or less.

I'm hoping to do it whenever my transmission wears down or breaks. everything but the stall speed convertor. It makes daily driving not so good. Can't just launch it, u gotta rev up I think. I am gonna get better clutches and all, then maybe a shift kit to hold the RPM's out a tad, and shift more positive.

outstanding.. this has been on my mind for a long time.. but many people have gave me another path..

they said why spend that cash and have a 5spd nt.. when u can spend the same and have a auto with a turbo.. i said i guess i see ur point.. then some said its not worth it.. it wont work good blah..

i realy want a 5spd now.. when i first got the car i couldnt drive stick so i opted for a auto.. plus i wasnt much into cars u know.. just always liked the way the eclipse looked..

well i really want to do this swap.. any info would be killer.. how hard is it to put the extra pedal in..and how much for the smaller brake pedal etc..

i was kinda hoping my tranny just blew up on me.. so i would need a new one.. i know this sounds lame.. but if that happened i think i would have to ask my parents to help me out.. which i hate to do.. but it would be a good way to get a nice 5spd.. my boy blew up his tibbys auto tranny.. now he has a 5spd..

but trisha kudos to u... do u still have ur auto shift knob??? if so can i get it from u... want to sand it down really smooth but i dont wanna mess mine up.. its alreay painted silver.. and i hate taking it off and putting it back on..

oh yea.. and to what eclipse804 said.. i would so love to sell my car and get a gs-t or gsx 5spd.. but this car is payed for and i have 10k into it now.. i would love to have a new car actually.. i kinda want a 3rd gen rx7 or a tt supra.. i think the rx-7 isnt to far fetched i can find one for a good price.. but then ill have car payments again..

i have less then 15 months left in the air force.. so after that there goes my steady paycheck.. i dont plan to stay in.. so figure i wont want to be stuck with a car payment.. when im in school who knows if ill have a part time job or not.. most likely i will..

but its kinda late now.. wish i would of waited a lil longer to buy a car when i got to fl..but i was new and didnt know to many people.. so i jus tbought it.. took me 10 days to find her..

Ya, I just want newbies to realize before they get in too deep, that there are alternatives. If I hadn't put so much $$ into my car already, it would be long gone. But like many others on this board, we put too much work and $$ into it. But for someone just starting out, I just want them to see that a much more cost effective alternative may be a gst or gsx. I've put over 5k into my car, and it's still slower than a stock civic that's manual, since I have an auto. Wish I had made the switch earlier, but now I'll be keeping this car for a while, and giving it to my bro later on.

Who said it wasnt possible?

theres a sweet blue GS in south florida that did the swap over a year ago. it also has a star turbo kit, and a chop top (looks like a damn t-top supra - the supra taillight conversion adds to the look). its also kitted out and slammed, a show car thats prolly never even seen full boost :(

they kept the auto ecu, but for the speedo they used one of the ABS speed sensors. im wondering what you could do for a car that doesnt have abs...

btw: congrats trisha! this is something i thought about doing but wussed out last summer. btw, i finally got to see my ARD p&p-ed intake manifold today, looks great!

personally in my opinion a AT is better than a MT. corse everyone has their opinions but when you sit in rush hour traffic for 3 hours and have a manual you wish you had a auto. plus its a fact that when you have a turbo in a manual and the turbo is going and you shift gears, the turbo has to re-spoil and get back up to it's spot before you shifted. in a auto that has a turbo, it's constantly going cause when the engine shifts there is no pause and it doesn't get shifted into neutral. that's why alot of the supra turbos are in automatics when they race cause they loose no horsepower when they shift.
11392, RE: AT - MT swap
Posted by evan2, Jan-09-02 07:12 AM
well most big time drag cars have auto trannies.. i mean not ur ordinary auto though..

and most supras have so much power that a standard will just end up eating through lots of tires..
11393, RE: AT - MT swap
Posted by Avenger, Jan-09-02 07:16 AM
Don't forget that the stock Supra tranny holds like ~450-500hp without major mods. That'd be just one big mess with our tranny.
