113267, AWD Discussion (not what you think) Posted by marius, Jan-13-05 05:09 AM
Still kinda new here but, for any of you who read SCC may remember the USCC 1 entry of a little Tiburon that could. So here is my thought: why not make a twin engine 2GNT with say, a turbo kit on each, running methanol or water injection or whatever to keep the tuning window wide with the rear engine as heat would be a problem. Think about it, if you have two independent engines, transmissions, etc. you would have a helluva fast car. That Tib was laying down like 650ish hp, could you imagine saying "My 2GNT lays down 700HP!". Yeah sure you are talking alot of extra weight, and having to get a custom fuel take and whatnot, and you have to run auto trannies, but chew on this: put one in D and the other in R. Think of the huge smoky clouds! Seriously tho, even with say, stage I turbos, the tuning would not be all that difficult and even laying down 200hp on each would still be 400hp. Yeah sure it would be an expensive endeavor, needing to buy two turbos, sets of cams, etc., but think about the possibilities. If you had the money you could go two stageV turbos and be sapnking SUPRAS! Back to the tiburon, it is (or was, dunno if he still has it) owned by Michael McIntyre of El Paso, TX. He was running methanol on two completely stock engines other than the turbos, no intercoolers of any kind and was laying down something like 330hp each. He did put his car on diet, it didn't really handle fo shit, but it ran a 10.2. A 10.2!! If I can find the mag with all the details on his car i will scan and post, but till then, let me know what yous guys think.

Well, no one has made a rear wheel drive or an all wheel drive 2GNT yet, which should probably be the first step. I wouldn't jump into a 2 engine project without an insane amount of experence with suspention design, engine mounting, welding experence, etc... I'd keep the engines stock at first just to get it running properly, then I'd mod it. I usually try to change only one variable at a time so if there's an issue you know exactly what to do in order to fix it.

As per Dino's input once I believe the rwd 2gnt would be accomplished via a 2.4 swapped sideways in with a Jeep Liberty NVT1500 Tranny and a GSX rear end or a Ford rear with a 240sx rear diff. The awd sceneaio would be the auto Dodge Caravan tranny which doesnt sound so hot.

That's what im talkin about. If we could just convince someone with the money to do that to a 2GNt that would be awesome. And why would you have to be a milloinaire? You just need to have the extra money. It theoretically "shouldn't" cost more than probably $30,000. Do I have that kind of scratch? No. But I'm sure somebody here does, by looking at some of the work that has been done on some of these cars. Believe if I can land an awesome job or hit a good jackpot of some sort I will be doing this definitely.

When I used to frequent the AT/DSM list, Vineet used to post alot about the project and it's not so much a money issue but there's TONs of problems that come up and it takes an extreme amount of time. Yes, it was probably expensive but the money was nothing compared to the amount of man hours. Hell, you can buy a 1G shell for next to nothing and a couple 6 bolts cheap enough. It's the fabrication and everything else kills you. I have seen vids of it run. Google "twin engine talon" and I'm sure you'll see it posted on a number of auto forums.

Feel free to e-mail Vineet about his project, and see how easy it was...

Yeah i remember when Vineet was posting during the project on Chicago DSM. Getting the motors tu run together on independent ECUs took about a year to get accomplished and semi trouble free. Vineet is no idiot either he is very intelligent and did most of the work himself.
I think making a RWD with a ford 9inch would be a prereq to a twin engine 2g. A GSX rear will never work on a RWD, just no strong enough as the only drive unit. Well mabe not the transfer case but the axle's and hubs would never hold 500hp by themselves.

Well Bret Rau's rwd DSM has a Ford rear but I doubt he's gonna help you much on giving specs on it.

What specs would i need from him? NONE putting a ford 9 inch in a car is not rocket science. you need a subframe taylored to the car with a 4 link rear coilover suspension. This has been used is drag racing for...oh, say 40 years. Its no differnt than tubbing a car for the strip only no one makes a universal subframe for our body. Scott glassock just finished his 1g last year with one.
Personally i would liek to use a DANA60 and keep it all mopar

tell me what that is

Dana60 is just Mopar's high end rear end used during the 60's and 70's. its just preference, the dana 60 would cost alot more because of the all the antique mopars searching for it. the 9inch is nice becasue there are so many manufacturers that make aftermarket parts and kits for them. Which is better would be and endless arguement, i just like the dana better for my choice (in otherwords if you find one i need it asap!)

haven't avenger guys done this like a dozen times? we need to stop naysaying and just jump in and do it up. the hardest part is finding a tranny that fits. hell it's easier making our car RWD then it would to make an Integra or Civic RWD (and people have done that lots). we already have a tunnel for the tranny and driveshaft.

113283, RE: AWD Discussion (not what you think) Posted by Star Turbo Talon, Jan-18-05 09:29 AM
Our tunnel is too small it would need to be cut out.

so you mean to say they somehow fit a transmission, transfer case, two differentials, and two driveshafts underneath our car somewhere to make our car AWD, but trying to fit one transmission, one driveshaft, and one differential takes up too much room?
|
113285, RE: AWD Discussion (not what you think) Posted by Initial DSM, Jan-19-05 06:19 PM
Well perhaps it is easier when you keep the engine transverse with just the issue of securing the transfer case, as opposed to rotating the engine sideways and cutting a bigger tunnel for the whole tranny to fit.

quite a few guys use a ford tbird irs for projects that they wanna keep IRS and not go to a live axle. as for the trans, youll need something a little stronger than the nv1500 in the liberty... now if the liberty has a removable bellhousing like the 4banger dakota did (dakota guys are using dak bellhousings and older ssupra turbo 5-speed and it makes it a bolt together affair) then you might have a good start on a RWD 2gnt.
twin engine..... there was a company that was making a vw twin engine setupbut they made a custom setup to stick with manny trannies... http://www.dubsport.com/projects.asp
gus did have a fwd van and used the good old 3-speed.... for those that wanna stick with an auto.... dump the 604 and put in a built neon 413/31th.... when built it can take 1000hp. :)
