From my understanding this motor is a "large 2.4L" (2429cc) and I've been wondering what the following bores will do in regards to increasing the overall displacement of the motor so I decided to do a little math. I even threw in some bore sizes for giggles.


stock bore = 2429cc = 2.4L = 145.7CI
.020 = 2xxxcc = 2.5L = 149.7CI
.030 = 2xxxcc = 2.5L = 150.6CI
.040 = 2xxxcc = 2.5L = 151.4CI
.060 = 2xxxcc = 2.5L = 153.2CI
.120 = 2xxxcc = 2.6L = 158.5CI
.140 = 2xxxcc = 2.6L = 160.3CI

I used the following sites for the calculations:

If I get "bored" (haha...) I might do the calculations for the 2.0 as well.

Well they appear to be the same thickness as the 2.0, just deeper (one inch taller deck height).

As far as the extreme .120/.140 over bore, I'm not sure how the walls would take it. I know a few neon guys have done similar bores to the 2.0. Going so large could create the potential for headgasket problems or the block might need to be sleeved.

As for myself I'd be just as happy with a .020 punch as a .060. I'm not really sure how much the hp/trq numbers would deviate from a "small" 2.5l to a "large" 2.5l. If its that noticeable, I'm sure I'd splurge.

You would not be able to bore larger than .060. if you really wanted to do this you would need a "wet" sleeve to go that large. Then you would have to look into custom pistons and Headgasket might becoem an issue. He if your going to spend that kind of money you might as well o-ring the block if you arent reqd to.

The 2.6 is done as a stroker as well as overbore. This infomation is nice but i dont see how it should be stickied.

I will look into your other request though.

I agree. I have seen pictures of a 420A bored out that far. Rings wore through the cylinder wall almost immediately. Alain has pictures of this. There really isn't any point to boring any 420A derivative in the interest of anything other than cylinder concentricity, imo.

Bore is not the way to increase displacement, stroke is, and for that matter it's better to have a strong block and focus more on the technology that makes it go. There's an old saying, there's no replacement for displacement, but that came from a day when the only electronics on an engine had more to do with sensors and spark plugs than anything else. Be happy with the 2.4 as it is, if anything focus on getting the rotating mass down rather than the bore up. Do we not remember the hell that the reverand went through with his 2.6 attempt?

2.6 attempt????? It wasnt an attempt it was a reality. That motor was running and on the dyno. Untuned it put out 306hp if I recall.Granted it was a real pain to create, it did come through in the end as was just sold to the third owner a month back.

i know this has been discussed far to many times but ill throw in my 2 cents anyway

anything under a .060 overbore is still less than 2500cc's, so its still a "large 2.4L". manufacturers round up, but the truth of it is that 1L = 1000cc's, so add it up.

cylinder walls might be a little thin but with the rate i rebuild engines anyway, it's fine. i went with the .060 myself, and i was more than happy with the low end torque.

All I remember about that thing was that it was a major PITA and it got sold because he was tired of it. Who bought it recently? What do they have it making? Still doesn't change my belief that boring metal out of the cylindar isn't the right way to increase displacement, but if I'm wrong about the reverends' 2.6 then I humbly retract my previous statment.

Brynden sold the car to one of my friends in WI then he sold the motor so someone else because of some issues related to the car being broken into and the insurance/lawyer issues. The car was running and still in the preliminary tuning stages whn it put down 306hp. Search and you will find out who the owner was. The new owner I dont know.

That post only proves how stupid of an idea this is and I would like to see where you count a "few" guys. I count 1 by that post unless you "see dead people". The guy who tried it stated the motor wouldnt hold bearings. Now tell me how this is a good idea when the 2.6 has been created with a stroke and a bore combination reliably. Not to mention you are still using the 2.0 stroke. How is this info a good idea?

Unless you show me measurements i will not believe boring a 2.0 that large. You should check out the 4g63 head conversion i have on my 420a.

My point is just because someone says they did it doesnt mean its factual. Show me the machining paperwork.

Those bores look HUGE but I think its just because, compared to the cylinder wall thats left, they are. That is probably the most surefire way to destroy a block I've ever seen.
