For quite a while now, I've been noticing a bit of white smoke coming out the exhaust whenever the engine is hot and I start up the car. It doesn't really smell like oil or anything, and the smoke goes away after revving it for a while... I concluded that it's probably just burning water.

So today I was in the garage repeatedly starting the car and shutting it off and what do I see on the tip of my muffler? About 3 or 4 drops of water, just sittin there on the tip. I imagine if the car was hot enough that it would've evaporated and turned into smoke.

Anyone have any idea where this water is coming from and how it's entering the combustion chamber? Could it be water in my gas tank or something else? It's been doing this for several months already...

naw, i would think its condensation since its been cold (winter).

i get a good wet spot sumtimes in my garage when im warmin her up in the mornings.

you could be burnin water, but i doubt it.

its just condensation. If you had enough water in your engine that it would come out the exhaust pipe I can gaurantee you that it would not run. The white "smoke" should just be steam

Yep, just condensation....mine does the same thing in the mornings when i start it up...its been being about 17 degrees here in the morings and about 3 mins later after i have been driving it stops.

Mine does it too.. it's just condensation. I blew a 3' tail of black crud out of my exhaust once when it was doing that. The water was picking up soot and grime from the pipe.. so i blew it out across the parking lot ;-)

Water is actually a byproduct of a gas-burning engine. You'll always see a little condensation out your muffler before it heats up enough to evaporate it. I read that today in the newspaper in a article these guys put out answering questions people write in. The original ques was from a guy whos 3 yr old kid was spraying water up the tail pipe with a garden hose. :)
