112643, Yay some more 2.4 questions

ok guys I looked and couldnt find the answer with all the talk of the 2.4 swap one question why? Im guessing we get more HP and bottom end grunt, but do we? I dont know. With boost what can it hold im not bench racing I really want to do this. A shop around here is selling a freshly rebuilt 420a long block (brand new head 0 miles) that I can use for my project 300 bucks stock insides. Drop in some forged internals and off I go. I want to go 2.4 but that 420a block is a hell of a deal I guess my question is what would Alain do :)

for the boosted 2.4 thats using srt4 insides what is max psi without breaking something

once you put the forged internals in that 420a the bill will jump from $300 to $1300-1400

for the same price you could also have a nice 2.4 with srt internals ready to go

no ones so far knows how much psi we can expect before blowing something

Pretty sure the SRT4s were looking at an upper limit of 500hp on stock internals before things began to fail catastrophically. My buddy across the street has SRT4 pistons/rods for his 2.4. Now he just needs to get it all back from the shop... and motivation to complete it.

Im in hawaii and I cant find a 2.4 block so my options are running out. Where can I get a built 2.4 with the pistons turned around, and have it shipped with out walking funny the next day.

There's no Stratus, Cirrus, Breeze, PT Cruisers in Hawaii?
112648, RE: Yay some more 2.4 questions
Posted by DR1665, Jul-03-06 06:10 AM
Contact Eddie Fierro. I know he has built them from time to time. As for not walking funny, even if the engine is completely free, you're looking at shipping a 400lb pallet to Hawaii. Maybe, if you're lucky, FedEx will give you a reach around or something...

none in hawaii that I can find for parts we are only about 50 miles wide and 45 tall its a very small place

alain
after thinking about it your right. What I save on a block ill spend on internals. Again the 2gnt gods have smiled on me today thanks now I just have to find a damn block.

what kind of question is 'how much psi can it handle'...

i feel like bashing you but ill be nice. 485psi, from a t25. go play.

the only question that hasnt been asked is WHY?...because why is a dumb question.

theres no replacement for displacement. get your boost faster, get some low end grunt...and smoke the shit out of people in the quickest possible fashion. torque wins races, and the 2.4 is a torquey wench. its loud, its pretty brute, and with solid motor mounts its a free massage chair at idle ;)

the whole story itself is unlike ANYONES in some aspects and exactly like EVERYONES in another. im fortunate to know a lot of dudes with 2.4's, and each build had different shit....and different problems, etc. theyre all one off, and when its all said and done....youre rolling something NO ONE else has, and thats not so common in this rice boy age. i like the challenge of innovation. duh.

and yes, if you want a cheap 2.4. build it with the srt4 bottom end, ~350whp daily is fast. they can handle more, but why? 400-500-600whp calls for a stray away from drivability, in my opinion. its all about what YOURE BUILDING IT FOR. that goes for every part you put on not just the motor.

I don’t think so are you saying that if anyone asks why its dumb or just when I ask its dumb. Why is that? :) Bash me all you want im a big boy I can take it. You where a BANME! once before, Right! Some people like that they can take their car into a shop and not have to explain what they did, or that they have parts from 3 different cars in your car.

I do want my car to stand out. I have read every 2.4 post I can find. Asking how much boost a motor can handle sounded like a good question at the time. Guess not.

The dumb thing to do would be something like starting an engine swap and not ask yourself why/how will this help me out

Oh and their is a replacement for displacement its called technology so in your own words “go play”

how did we learn about the limits of the stock 420a when turboed ?
after seeing a big bunch of peoples blowing their engines

how we will learn how much boost our 2.4 frankenstein engines could support ?
when a bunch of us will have blown engines

and since there is less than 15 cars running with 2.4 engines that could take a very long time

unless you've enlisted the assistance of some folks that know alot more than yourself, you won't be driving a 2.4 by christmas. i guarantee that.

Im having a shop do it so yes by christmas. Once I gather all the parts (working on that now) start to finish is about a month, the guy doing it is a neon freak so im in good hands.

"Oh and their is a replacement for displacement its called technology so in your own words “go play” "

I used to say that too. Until I built blower motors for a living. 1400bhp, on pump gas moving a 18,000lb cigarette boat at 150mph. thats power. I have played, both with MANY 2.4's, one 2.5L 420a and plenty of power and boost. there are a lot of ways to make power, a larger motor helps a lot. main reason for the 2.4 swap, main reason for my 2.5L build.

i agree with chris, christmas is a long shot, but good luck to your neon homie.

oh and the reason your question was dumb was:

there isnt any common pressure you can put on a motor. a t88 turbo flowing 19psi, is not the same amount of air that a 20g mitsubishi turbo is flowing at 19psi. saying that "oh my motor can handle 40psi!" is stupid. a lot of factors will determine power output, but PSI is noting without knowing how much cubic feet is moving.

now as to the question to how much boost you can run....

thats dependent on whats called anti detonation controls, or the limit to how much heat and pressure the fuel you have can take before it explodes on its own. if you have say a 9.6:1 compression (stock 2gnt) and boost it to 1 bar, the compression ratio is exactly double. on normal pump gas, a compression ratio this high will do some hurt for you. so the answer to how much boost you can run, is as much as the turbo can flow....as much as the fuel resist spontaneously exploding (detonation) and how much the engine can mechanically hold (its actual strength i.e- forged bottom end) there are other factors, but im tired of typing.

:sigh: chris....dude we really need to make swap kits lol

swap kits... definitely down for that. once we tag-team your weld beads with my machining skills, we'll have some products to aid the potential swappers out there. sounds like they're waiting on us turby...

If you build it, they will buy. And probably me too. Just make some mounts and oil pans and you'll be set!

I honestly did not know that putting together a 2.4 setup was as cheap as Alain said it was.

I know it would be hard for you guys to give me an exact dollar amount, but what ballpark are we looking at for a 2.4 setup on my Talon, pretty much starting from scratch. I can get a complete bottom end for under 80 bucks at my local junkyard.

By the time I am ready to start ripping the talon to bits, I should be graduated and have the steady income to spend. Hopefully by then turby and 2point4 will have there shit togehter and sell me a kit. I would not hesitate to buy a kit from turby, he's the fucking man for 2.4 swaps...or at least thats what the cool kids tell me.

screamin-e, bro if u can snag a block for 80 bones, get that shit! the yard here in sac wants 500 for shortblock, no im not kidding. as far as turby and myself getting our shit together, there are two hurdles we have to jump... first of all is financing, daily driving these loot sucking whores really doesn't leave alot of extra cheddar in your pocket for the necessities we need to make these kits a reality just yet, ya know? but it will happen. and second, is locality, that gangsta nigga josh (the only man i know that would turn wrenches for nine hours in the pouring rain, just to get the beast up and running again) is only about 650 miles down south of me. and that kinda puts a damper on the progress factor. we are making plans to jump these hurdles though... know that. i've put up some pics of my parts on dsmtuners in the n/t section, you can take a look at them if you're interested. i tried loading them up here but for some reason they wouldn't load. i have a short video of it running on myspace too, search up my email: trustedone2003@yahoo.com

haha straight up.

...unless you go crazy

Bigtymr- i have a few other 2.4L swap ready passenger side motor mounts id be willing to part with if an offer is decent, also if you need your oil pan welded I can do it and send it back. Chris and I are getting things together, we'll post up when we can.

I'll be sure to let you know when I want to start the madness...I just missed out on a $200 2.4L Stratus Engine, (Don't know if that is a deal) on ebay, shipped for free...We have a mill here so there are plenty of people that can weld one up for me but since you've got experience I might have to take you up on that offer.

Alright guys, I'm a complete newbie to this kinda stuff, but I've been looking around for hours reading and searching and I'm gonna take a shot in the dark and try to compile all the stuff I've learned and see if you guys can confirm/correct/enlighten me.

Step 1: Get engine block from a 2.4 Stratus, Cirrus, Breeze, or nt PT Cruiser and srt-4 internals/forged internals.

Step 2: Create a homemade passenger side motor mount and jerry-rig the oil pan so the exhaust piping clears it.

Step 3: Rotate pistons 180 degrees, flip cam gears so that 2.4 is displayed on the outside.

Step 4: Remove 2.0L and replace with 2.4L and put the frustrating final touches on like wiring etc.

I know it's going to be more complicated than that and there's always unforseen issues, but that's pretty much the gist of it, at least the hardest stuff, right? I'm seeing the cost is somewhere around 1500 if using srt-4 internals... depending on how much you get charged for an engine, that about right?. I've also heard that it can take anywhere from - i think one guy one guy said three days... others have said 6+ months... how long did it take you guys on average? Again, every one is different, I'm sure. Time not including balancing and the conversions to reduce low-end torque and raise horsepower.

Now for the ignorant questions. If I were going to use an aftermarket header would I get one one fit for an eclipse or one for say a pt cruiser? also, should I stick with stock fuel injectors or go to something like 24lb? or higher?

I know there's a bunch of posts on here about this and you guys have said alot already so thanks for your help this far and especially for anything in response to this.
112670, RE: Yay some more 2.4 questions
Posted by alain95i4, Nov-15-06 06:16 PM
1 yes PLUS a 420a head
2 yes plus hacking some PS, alternator and AC brackets, hoses etc
3 yes pistons only not the rods

injectors bigger is better and any accessories/bolton mods need to be for eclipse
a stock header will need a longer dp

don't forget balancing shafts removal and filling/patching the oil gallery which feed those shafts

Alain you use the SRT4 oil pump and pan. if you have any pics after you cut it to fit the exhaust. I want to show my shop what they need to do.

or better yet what are all the srt4 parts that can be used for the swap. There is a totaled one at a yard here.

Still cant find a damn block.

I used 2g stratus oil pump and pan it's easier to work with

Funny thing is that Jeff sent me 2 copper crush washers as well. Part number is 5045039-AA List=$1.70 Sale Amount=$1.20. The appear to be the correct size for the coolant lines. The oil feed line uses a much larger copper crush washer.

My oil return line didn't include a seal and my local dealers part manual didn't list the seal either. Is there one? Part Number? Also does anyone have the the stud/nut part numbers for the SRT turbo to O2 housing and the O2 housing to downpipe stud part numbers?

Figured this might cut down on searching for prices and part numbers for those turbo guys wanting to SRT a 2.4 .

*Edit- ignore the stuff about the oil and coolant lines you won't be needing those.
