112590, starting to play with e85 Posted by Dirtbike59, Jun-09-06 07:05 PM
its been a few months since i posted a question asking if anyone has tried useing it in there car.. since i havent found anyone that has put it in, i have decided to start testing myself... this is going to be kinda a slow test due to the nearest station being 40 mins from me. Now i didnt just decided to go fill my tank with it... thats a big no no. in stock form i dont recomend anymor ethan a 50/50 mix. I havent hit that point and wont for a bit but a guy on a subaru forum is doing the same thing... right now i am runing about a 20/80 mix and the car feels good. dont know if there is any power gains yet but seeing half the price at the pump makes me wanna get more into this.. in a few weeks i will also have the cable to run my laptop to my car and record all the sensors...
Now is it possible to make the car go straight e85? yes... its just you will have to swap out a few parts and make some computer changes...
I will try to keep anyone interested up to date

search on the neons.org message board there are a couple guys running it and they have all the necessary mods listed to run it.

E85 looks promising. There are a few guys on the neon forum running E85 with great results. One guy has over 20k on it so far. I've been thinking about trying it out as well, I'm lucky though, a G-station is only 10 min. away :)

this is a really old thread, but we were talking about e85 in my chem lab and I guess they mix the corn juice with a really low grade of gasoline which will defeat its limitably to resist knock

Perhaps, but you could mix low grade unleaded with ethanol and Mrs. Butterworths for all I care. If it's $0.50 cheaper than the $3.26/gal 91 octane I'm buying here in Phoenix and has even the same octane rating, I'm buying. Tonight. :P

BANME!! Support the farmers who grow the fuel!!!! Instead of the middle eastern oil lords.

Isn't that about the price for a gallon of milk down there too? lol
And why does my above post say banme in bold?! Did I do something wrong? :-o lol?

My housemate is a officer in tha air force. We shop on base much much cheaper.

how did it turn out?

One of the Chicago guys that runs Devotuning stated that you can run a 4:1 ratio or some amount on those lines and get the effect of 110 octane fuel. I would have to go back and re-read my emails but i distinctly remember it was a cheaper alternative to running high octane fuel.

it IS a higher octane fuel :P

yes it is high octane fuel and it is cheaper, is it to good to be true? yes e85 only make 73% as much power per volume that means 27% worse gas mileage and power i looked into it for awhile and although it is promising for very high compression and turbocharged applications but with the additional boost or timing advance necessary the make back the power lost all of that 105 to 110 is needed just to make the same power level as on 91 or less. remember octane does not mean power it means resistance to detonation so if you are running a not using a power adder or ludacrisly high compresion with timing advance 100+ octane is not going to help your power and its not really any cheaper considering that on the amount of gassoline you could go 100 miles you can only travel 73 on e85. a though i did have was perhaps mixing vp racing fuel and e85 to find an appropriate compromise between price and power

Methanol has much less potential energy than gasoline, too. You're missing the point.

i not going to argue for or aggainst methanol because i do not know that much about but my friend who races in the pro sportsman class at the local drag strip said that when methanol becomes to rich it can become more prone to detonation and the reason people use it isnt for octane rating but the cooling effect on intake temperatures is this true? my point with the first post is that ethanol isnt the godsend that people say it is and we still get gas at a third the price of the rest of the world

More like hydrolock. You have to burn roughly twice the amount of methanol to equal the power of gasoline, but the point is... you can get a whole lot more of it in there. it's almost always easier to burn more fuel than it is to move more air.

true, yes. Two ways to tame detonation, cool the air or raise the octane...
its doing both.

I've been reading a ton on this, looks like it could be very simple to switch over, possibly in the $500-$1000 range maybe less. HP and fuel economy would go down a bit but the cost vs. useage is still less than paying $3.50+ a gallon. plus the cost of the fuel is expected to go down as the technology improves. Looks like it could be done safely with a few key components, megasquirt, walbro 255lph, bigger injectors and a wideband O2 kit.

from reading that thread....it looked like some of them just upgraded injectors and it ran fine. and others even just ran it with straight e85 and no upgrades. is there actually a need to tune it with MS? I'm guessing it's the high octane rating that's keeping it from knocking even when it's real lean like that?

the idea with going with all that I said is that you'll have a car that can run perfectly on the stuff 100% of the time with no issues and the ability to switch back, ie: load a different fuel map for regular gas. bumping up the injector size or just throwing E85 straight in the car may not cause problems right off the bat but it will cause issues down the road as the stock ecu tries to compensate for the different octane and stoichiometric values, either eventually causing extremely lean or rich situations that will do damage to something. just upping the injectors alone without doing any tuning will force you to just run the E85 because regular fuel will run way too rich. no changes will result in very lean conditions that the octane of the E85 will help compensate for but it will still likely cause detonation, and we all know that detonation=BAD
