112180, Early spring dyno vids and some other stuff... lots of pics 56k beware Posted by quicksilver99, Nov-08-08 06:42 PM
I was cleanin up the hard drive tonight and came across some stuff from early spring. These are from the first day the car was on the dyno at the local shop. I'm a regular and know most of the guys personally so dyno time is almost nothing as far as cost-granted its free of anyone else's car, I do all my own tuning and drive the car myself.
These are from the first time this years motor crossed into boost, I had 9 or 10 pulls between 2500 and 6000 rpm to tune the fuel map transition into boost and to find a good base line AFR to start with. I believe these are at about 10 lbs boost and the car was makin about 220hp at the wheels and still a bit choppy. But it of course was only the beginning. I think we reached about 382hp at the wheels that day around 19~20ish lbs boost, if I come across the scanned in printout later I'll throw that up too. But I think that might be gone by now, and the sheet is somewhere in my tool box at home so it might be a while before I can confirm exactly what it was that day.
List of mods:
Stock length eagle H beam rods-off the shelf variety
My spec JE forged postons-9.4:1 static compression and TRI-cote cearamic tops with teflon coated skirts 0.020 over -I think I dropped about $1100 for these last winter...
polished stock crank
full groove cleavite rod and main bearings with calico coating on inner surfaces
Melling H.P. oil pump-not that it really counts...
My own PnP on the head: nothing major- but the superflow flow bench showed about a 27% increase in airflow. I'll have to find those numbers also
Crower valvetrain-regular off the shelf type
stock size stainless valves
My spec Crower cams- similiar to stage 3 lift, but with a little more turbo friendly overlap and duration-also may have been a waste of money, time will tell...
stock cam pully's where used because I had the fidanza ones and we ended up back at 0 degrees adjustment after dyno time and I had to change the belt because the Gates one I had started to fray
OBX intake: yes, Its an obx, but don't worry, I spent about 4 hours with a die grinder and flowbench before it went on the car
Aeromotive A1000 fuel system: 1/2" feed line-stock pressure port return
RC 750 cc injectors
60mm TB
Garret T3 60-1 turbo
twin tial 38mm wastegates, external dump
3 foot long 4" dia downpipe
And last but not least, good old MSnS
Everything else you can see I made myself over the last winter
The dyno I use is a dynocom with an eddy-current absorber fitted to it
Here's the first pull, nothing impressive but its something to look at
2500-6000 RPM
Next one, but from the passenger side. This was 3000-6500 rpms, same power but torque curve was smoothing out with the afr's and timing was dialing in a little better.
and some pics of the build up:
home made vacuum reservoir bolting to windshield washer location:

building the manifold for the third time over...

And its done and bolted together:

And the greatest part of all!!!!!! A late night sign from the DSM gods passed on to me through culvers fast food that the car would start flawlessly the next day!

And it did, couldn't even tell that it had been apart for 9 months

wow, always fun to view pictures. Was that manifold that gave you a hard time with heating your Power steering pump/lines?

Um, you have a line on how to get crower to move on a special grind? You know I need one for the NA, right? Hit me up if so.

This is the one... It's all been taken out recently. The pump seals started to fry, even after a 14 Ga stainles heat sheild was put in place. I even tried to put a tranny cooler in place of the stock one and no help what so ever. It was fine while normal driving, but if I really got on it hard the pump would start wining and the fluid would boil till it cooled down. I have gotten used to driving without the PS because I had cut the belt earlier this summer. It's all out now, but it's not as nice as my civic, and I have some serious problems with my right shoulder-I can't push straight away from myself or it disslocates- So this is something I have been trying to avoid for quite a while.

I wish this was in my automatic, and I hope that one will make it as far as this one. As far as the cams, My hookup is the machine shop I live at part time... He has some very close ties with some of the more major companies. This one was a bit of a hassle to get through them because it wasn't the typical 2700 hp twin turbo big block shit he normally builds so when he called it in they where kinda like WTF? We (Mike Tiry-the owner- and myself) spent some time playing with a number of different profiles. And he has the equipment and software and designs his own V-8 camshafts, so we just worked with a old junk head I had and started number crunching. This winter I'll probably be trying out a different set, and when that line opens up I'll let you know Mark. We may be able to get a slightly better rate for two sets. I believe I dropped $750-800 for these. And before anybody asks, I'm not going to give up the exact specs. Like any proprietary grind, this is R&D, and each builder has thier secrets.

Definitely keep me posted. I mean, its not like the Crower 420a's are out of the ordinary for Crower. They already have the ramp and cores etc. (the reason I choose these over Cranes is because the ramp is not quite as sharp as the Cranes). The cost is a bit more than I was hoping (was figuring $600ish. They used to do special grinds on Modern Performance for less than that) but you never know.
Now, you know, those cams you have may need to go into a different set-up to be used to their potential, lol(though in general thought, I think you are wasting time with that kind of lift). So if you need to test those out in my set-up just let me know, lol.

Dont worry mark, I'll keep you in mind... lol
I chose the specs that I did because of the goal I have in mind. They are a bit extreme for what I have now, and still need lots of fine tuning. But about 4 or 5 years ago, on another forum called "import nation" I made a statement. And one of our fellow 2gnt members-I forget his screen name here- went by the name "Black Magic" on there, very strongly dissagreed with what I had to say. I made a goal for my car and he felt it was unattainable, take that back, impossible. I entered into the 420A relm with a good background in perormance engines, but his supposed F1 team and they're knowledge seamed to be far greater than mine....
Long story short, that was a long time ago, what I said still stands, only he's the only one who really knows what I'm after. But to sum things up; There is an answer somewhere..., and I WILL find it!
funny... his disbelief is kind of a constant reminder to myself, a way to stay on course. I have no grudge, mearly a goal I have to achieve.

Black Magik is here too, thats Curtis. Granted Curtis i do know him, he is a good guy but the F1 team is not run by him nor tuned by him. Curtis has a lot to learn all around.
If you want to do it Mark, I have learned other peoples opinions are just that.....try it for what its worth. with enough time and money, you can do anything. Most people are looking at doing something where money is a big factor and spending what Mark and I have dumped is not the realm of reasonable to most people.

I know the feeling.

Heh heh, yeah, that's a bit of a painful area just to satisfy curiosity or to prove a point (and I know you are talking about Peachy, Terry).
