111950, maybe timing issue?
Posted by Tuxdreamerx, Dec-09-08 11:56 AM
so the other night I decided to be an idiot and give into peer pressure and did a massive burnout. redlined 1st and everything. afterwards my car felt like it was missing slightly. now I did figure out I broke my rear trans mount. I pulled the plugs they were all burnt a few had oil on them I ran a compression test and it was even all the way across. the missing only starts once the car warms up but I don't really feel any lack in power. I got new plugs and wires and still its there. could I have skipped a tooth from such high rpms or do you think I bent a valve or something? if I did anything internal would I get a good compression test? im leaning towards the timing how can I check it without retiming it? could the computer need reset maybe I possibly threw something off in the ecu from revving so high. I don't know I just need some ideas maybe the tranny mount is just making it feel like a miss.

If the timing belt skipped a tooth it would have shown up on the compression test. All of the cylinders would have been low

Well they were all 150 is that low for our cars? I just figured since they were all the same it was fine.

Edit: By the way dont ever unplug the wire from the coil pack while the car is running. It hurts.

It was the o2 sensor the wire got jammed between the o2 sensor and the condensor fan and was grounding out. I think I blew my o2 sensor though.

150 is low for our cars. If you look in the specs section off of the homepage, it'll tell you in there. Range is 170-225. But as long as they are all the same (150 across) thats a good sign of normal engine wear. If you aren't burning oil and you're passing smog, then I guess its fine.

im not burning any oil. but I only have 2500 miles on the motor so maybe I did do something bad. the head is port and polished and its bored 0.020 over. I fixed the O2 sensor wire but once the car warms up it misses really bad. im out of ideas im gonna take the O2 sensors out and clean them up and see if that helps if not ill replace both of them. if anyone knows of anything common that would cause a miss once the car warms up please let me know.

Check your EGR harness. Goes around near the TB.

You may have tweaked the motor so much that the harness is grounding out on the EGR tube.

That will cause some issues.

Also, skipping a tooth wouldnt throw the CEL, I think.

But you will get a CEL for the timing being off.

Do a keydance. It's not common knowledge but there is a CEL for stupidity. I bet that's the one that pops up.

Ya skipping a tooth will not throw the CEL. I did that and no CEL. My timing is off by 2 teeth or so now and still no CEL.

Are you running stock compression pistons?

DJ, could you shed some light on the keydance you are talking about? It's new to me. Thanks

Yeah just OEM pistons. A little update on this issue. I dropped a friend off tonight and when I was driving back I was like 5 blocks from my house and the oil pressure light came on! I got that oh shit feeling and pulled off the side of the road got a light out and started looking for bad oil leaks and saw nothing. Checked the oil and it was at the max line but it seemed a little watery to me. I havent gotten on it or anything since my rear tranny mount is broken I dont want to break anything else. Now the first thing that pops in my head is blown head gasket, maybe that would explain the low compression. Either way tomorrow im gonna fix the mount and start checking connections maybe the oil light is doing that because the connection is coming loose now from the engine tweaking. Just my luck this thing is deciding to shit on me with 2500 miles on the engine. I guess I may spend the first part of next year rebuilding again. My friend has a 89 civic thats a total POS that ill be able to drive though at least it just needs a alternator put back on it which he has.

EDIT: this is a qoute from one of terrys posts and its making everything make sense now. I have been hearing a gargling when I turn the car off.
Terrys post -
That "Gargling" is boiling water, that is your immediate problem, regardless of what your gauges says the coolant is boiling which means a real watery mix or air pocket in head. Possibly head gasket, or bad thermostat, or water pump impeller is not turnig with the shaft

Here's the keydance.
http://www.2gnt.com/?d=the_keydance

If the timing is off a tooth it will throw a code.

133 P1390 11 Timing belt skipped 1 tooth or more
From here:
http://www.2gnt.com/?d=PCM_Error_Codes
I know it comes up, because I have gotten it.

Edit: I have had the "gargling" you refer to when I had a pocket of air in the head. I drained the coolant and refilled. And it took away the problem. Although my temp. gauge was reading high at the timing.

Get the codes!

wow i didn't know our cars had that feature. I've never read anything about that before on here. Thanks for the info!

Ya the head gasket could cause the low compression. Mine is headgasket is leaking also. I also have the water swooshing behind the dash when i start it up. Does the oil look kind of milky or like mocha? (light brown) Look in your coolant overflow resevior too for that mocha looking shit. (Oil and coolant mixed)

Edit: I replaced the broken mount and found that the oil sending unit wire broke and was shorting causing the light to come on. I havnt driven it since I replaced the mount to tell if my miss/vibration is gone once the car is warm. my cv shaft on the drivers side was rubbing the lower arm.
